The conversation between President Barack Obama and Saudi King Abdullah early Thursday, Feb. 10, was the most acerbic the US president has ever had with an Arab ruler, DEBKAfile's Middle East sources report. They had a serious falling-out on the Egyptian crisis which so enraged the king that some US and Middle East sources reported he suffered a sudden heart attack. Rumors that he had died rocked the world financial and oil markets that morning and were denied by an adviser to the ruling family. Some Gulf sources say he has had heart attacks in the past.
Those sources disclose that the call which Obama put into Abdullah, who is recuperating from back surgery at his palace in Morocco, brought their relations into deep crisis and placed in jeopardythe entire edifice of US Iran and Middle East policies.
The king chastised the president for his treatment of Egypt and its president Hosni Muhbarak calling it a disaster that would generate instability in the region and imperil all the moderate Arab rulers and regimes which had backed the United States until now.

It is unimaginable that the United States would not support Israel.
The Saudi Royal family has always been concerned that what is currently happening in its neighboring countries could happen to them. (I remember reading that something like 80% of al-Quaeda recruits were coming from Saudi around the 9-11 time.) Apparently some of the populus was unsatisfied.
There was a very interesting take (onNPR?) not long ago about Jews in the United States becoming somewhat less supportive of some of Israel's policies. Maybe the debka website has something on that.
What would you say our energy policy should be?
Uh, with Mubarek apparently really gone, and Algeria gathering another head of steam-it does look like the Mahgreb (sp) has the bit (sp) in its teeth.
Price of barrel oil went down after Mubarek stepped down. What do you make of that?
I guess President Obama really hurt King Abdullah's feelings for the King to call on Iran for support according to your debka website article. That seems like a weird alliance...
Thanks for the website-very interesting!
What is going on over there is so scary. I pray the muslim brotherhood does not get in to power in Egypt. I am very worried about Israel and the US.
Off to watch Hannity now. It's a bit overblown in the short term, especially by someone like Hannity, but the Muslim Brotherhood are very patient people and in the long term will likely end up with quite a bit of influence, if not eventual control of the government at some point. As a country our best bet is to have transitioned away from our policy of importing oil from the increasingly unstable Middle East before that happens, by whatever means necessary. Let the rest of the world shoulder more of the burden for a change.
Marg,
If only members of congress and the administration could see things as clearly as you. But the problem with washington is... that the pockets of lawmakers and policy makers aren't full ENOUGH! They haven't figured out how to hide the payoffs as well as they once did. sorry to be so negative... but we've been trying to get off foreign oil since LBJ and Nixon and we have the answer right under our feet. Marg for congress!

Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…

AboutAs exciting as this is, we know that we have a responsibility to do this thing correctly. After all, we want the farm to remain a place where the family can gather for another 80 years and beyond. This site was born out of these desires. Before we started this site, googling "shale' brought up little information. Certainly nothing that was useful as we negotiated a lease. Read More |
