The state Mineral and Energy Board on Wednesday conducted its monthly lease sale in the LaBelle Room of the LaSalle Office Building in Baton Rouge.

The board collected more than $1.8 million in bonuses in the May sale, bringing the total collected for FY 09-10 to more than $55.3 million. For the calendar year, that total is $20.4 million.

At this month’s lease sale, the board awarded 17 leases covering more than 4,380 acres, out of 63 nominated tracts covering 61,447 acres.

The Board sold leases in 11 parishes – Assumption, Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, Calcasieu, Cameron, East Baton Rouge, Lafourche, Plaquemines, St. Mary and Vermillion. Of the 17 leases sold, the majority were sold in south Louisiana, with 14 leases sold in southern parishes and 3 in north Louisiana.

In researching the decades-old Tuscaloosa Trend and the immense wealth it has generated for many, I find it deeply troubling that this resource-rich formation runs directly beneath one of the poorest communities in North Baton Rouge—near Southern University, Louisiana—yet neither the university ( that I am aware of)  nor local residents appear to have received any compensation for the minerals extracted from their land.
