US Natural Gas Production Graphs - EIA (2/26/10)

Attached are a set of graphs that show historical natural gas production thru December 2009 for the US and several key states. Total US production in December was 62.8 Bcfd which was a 0.7% decrease from November.  Overall gas production in the US has remained relatively flat since July 2008 but may be showing signs of decline. Most states experienced only minor changes in production but New Mexico & Wyoming combined for a decrease of 0.4 Bcfd from November.

 

Louisiana gas production was 5.2 Bcfd in December which is a 1.2 Bcfd increase since March 2009.

Maybe this could finally be the decline in production from the cutback in rigs that everyone has been waiting for. I imagine this time next month we could be looking at a 5 year average deficit from all the big withdrawls we have coming over the next couple weeks. Sure would be nice to start the injection season with an ongoing decline in production. Maybe that could work against the Nat Gas shorts who look to be winning as of right now and in the short term. Any thoughts?

Scott, it definitely could finally be the result of the drilling rig cutback but need to see a couple of more months to get a clearer trend. It is also possible that production was impacted by the cold weather in December.

Yeah you could be right about that. Although, I hope not because we could possibly see the next 3 months of distorted reports due to one nasty winter and not truly know what we're looking at. Are you seeing industrial demand trying to make a comeback? I know we continue to get improving manufacturing reports, and it looks as if Manufacturing sector has possibly lead the way out of the recession.

Scott, there are also some good indications that the US chemical industry has made a comeback in 2009. If true that will also contribute to increased industrial natural gas demand.

Les B ----something wrong with math---If US production ~ 63Bcf/month X 12 = ~ 756Bcf/ year how do we get 3.8Tcf in storage? Yes some LNG imports but not > 500Bcf this year. Yes we had residual of +-1Tcf in storage at begining of injection season last April. I can not follow US production only 63 Bcf for December math is "Fuzzy" can you explain what's missing in this report????????

Adubu, the rate in December was 62.8 Bcf per day (Bcfd) which would equal ~ 1,947 Bcf for the month. I hope that helps clear the "fuzz". 8-)
