The man always responded to every email he got, no matter who it was, and always made you feel important. The world lost a great man.
March 3, 2016
My deepest sympathies. Like so many others could say, I wouldn't be where I am today, if it wasn't for Aubrey's vision, hard work, and generosity. He was truly a great man.

March 3, 2016
The first time I met him he said "call me Aubrey." And, everybody called him "Aubrey" even though he was the boss. Aubrey was kind and respectful to everyone. And, he gave generously to charities when he could and he apologized unnecessarily when he could not. Aubrey was always humble and approachable. He was a maverick and one of a kind. He will be deeply missed. Prayers to his wife and children at this difficult time.

A great loss for this City and State. My prayers for the family and friends during this most difficult time.

"Its so much darker when a light goes out, than it would have been if it had never shone."
Thank you Aubrey for your very, very bright light and the many ways you and Katie have illuminated a better world, because you cared.

My deepest sympathy to Aubrey McClendon's family. We grieve for the loss of this good man but can never know the depth of your grief.

Oklahoma City is a better place because of Mr. McClendon's philanthropy, business acumen and so much more. I lived in OKC in 1966-1967 and returned for almost 8 years a full 40 years later. I was amazed at how much the city had changed - both aesthetically and recreationally. It's obvious Mr. McClendon's hand was in so much of this.

I currently live in California and was surprised at how brokenhearted the news of his passing made me. But, last evening, I worked my way through that and realized how many things and times he entered peripherally into my life, although I had never met him personally.

Today, I grieve but more so for his family although still brokenhearted.

I know God's comfort can sustain you, his family, through this very difficult time. Mr. McClendon will be honored and beloved by so many of us - thank you for your selfless gift to us of his talents and generosity during his lifetime.

I once heard Aubrey's generosity described as "crazy". I'm humbled that I have been a recipient of his kindness. Thanks for all you've done to make OKC classy. Rest in peace. And many prayers for his family during this difficult time.
March 3, 2016
My sincerest sympathies. My first business lunch when I was transferred to OKC w/ Oryx was lunch with Aubrey summer 1989 when he and Tom were just starting CHK. He never got too important to return an email or phone call or stop and say Hi catch up while making deals/contacts at NAPE in Houston. Rest in peace fellow landman! You will be so missed!

In life, it is the dash that counts the most. Aubrey's dash...well, it was more than filled with all his works, his accessibility, compassion for others, especially his employees. He touched so many, many lives and most are better for it. He is home now.
A former employee.

Not - "how did he die"
But - "how did he live"
Not - "what did he gain"
But - "what did he give"

When applying these simple standards it becomes obvious that there can never be another shooting star like Aubrey McClendon.
Praying for God to grant strength to Aubrey's family, friends and coworkers as they struggle to come to terms with this tragedy.
With sincere respect,
a former Chesapeake employee

My thoughts & prayers are with you & your family, Aubrey was a great man that contributed so much to Oklahoma City. If Aubrey had not given my husband a chance 9 years ago at Chesapeake I'm not sure where our family would be right now. He will be greatly missed & remembered for all that he gave to not only our community but to our family.

March 3, 2016
As a former employee, I was so saddened to hear this news. I will never forget my first day working at CHK and meeting Aubrey. He was always visible on campus, sometimes buying breakfast for us. He was always charismatic and nobody could do a town hall like he could. He was not the kind of CEO that was unapproachable and he encouraged giving. I will miss seeing him at Thunder games on the TV too. His love and passion for OKC will have a lasting impact. He loved this city and his employees, it showed. My prayers go out to his family.

Although the pollution associated with high-volume fracking is a downside to his legacy, Aubrey McClendon was bigger than life. A one in a billion human being who truly tried to improve this world. I had the pleasure of briefly meeting him just once, a meeting one doesn't forget. God Speed Aubrey and sincere condolences to his family and friends.

I reckon most people don't understand that some of the wealth with which he was generous came inappropriately off the backs of land owners all over this nation.

Those comments are a bit rich, to put it mildly.

I enjoyed reading them.  Hagiography at its lowest.

The comments paint a vivid picture of just how long the Gravy Train extended--miles and miles.

I have to give him credit.  His con worked.

The facts: a man who lost tens of billions of dollars, while living like a Robber Barron.  At his death he is lionized by many. Fancy that.

The professional wrestler known as the Million Dollar Man claimed "everybody has his price."  The comments prove it.

Bob Dylan said: steal a little and they will put you in jail. Steal a lot and they will make you King.

Well, I have seen stones thrown quite often. They are usually thrown at any questioning of the integrity or judgement of industry execs. As to using JC for authority, allow me to use Earl K Long. When they start singing "How Great Thou Art," hold on to your back pocket.

I did not miss it, but my point is if you want to wail and eulogize this elite sociopath then by all means do. Maybe that would get a better reception in a church full of folks in on the racket, not here of all places. Burial or not, he was what he was. I have no compassion for him and I dare say many do not. If expressing this is to be labeled brutal than posting such syrupy and obsequious paeans should at least be considered poor form.

Hey Jay. I agree. And I also agree with the first responder - David Klvac. He always replied to emails.

The irony here is without his ability to put deals together the Haynesville may never have happened or at least not to the extent that it has. CHK would never have happened. The problem is they "The Frackers" found a way to produce more gas than can be used but at the same time probably kept this Country from going into a deep depression. With the price of NG as a feed stock and energy source so low during the 08 recession this is what probably saved the US.

And to the Justice Dept. allegations against him. That to a great extent is SOP in the industry. I had that happen to me as a mineral owner back in the 80's by two major companies. So that's nothing new. I guess because of his profile and being an independent the JD was going to make an example out of him.

i agree with Joe and Jay. i posted on one of the related threads that for me as a land and mineral owner, Aubrey was a mixed bag, but more positive rhan negative. i got lease bonuses that i would have never imagined in my 60+ years. i don't like the way CHK does business, and for me, it has only gotten worse since Aubrey left.

The man did a great deal of good in OKC, and overall, he did a lot of good in NW LA.

i agree that Mr. Mayo's words speak for themselves

Apparently, killing yourself when you're about to be found out is quite common in the Oil & Gas business too.

This past weekend, I was at a BBQ  in Houston, on Lazy Lane, with a group of industry people. Many said that in the 1980's so many people jumped out of windows in Midland, Texas that they enacted a zoning ordinance prohibiting construction of buildings higher than 4 stories to curb the impacts of the jumpers.

I haven't researched that so I'm not sure if it's true.
