Anyone have info on drilling to monitor gas pressure away from actual well?

I talked to my neighbor yesterday and he told me that they are fixing to drill between our houses to monitor the gas pressure on the well that they are fixing to start drilling.  Granted there is over a quarter of a mile between our houses, but I was wondering what this will be and if anyone had heard of it before.

I think your neighbor may be confusing a "monitor well" with something to do with "pressure".  When completing (fracking) a horizontal well, a monitor well is used for "micro seismic" monitoring of the fractures created in the formation.  By observing the creation of the fractures being induced in real time, the completion crew can adjust their pumping regime to get the spatial frac cylinder that is intended.

It would be of interest if you or your neighbor could get more detail.  There is new approach to drilling multiple wells as a group called "cube" development.  This is used where there are a group of closely located horizontal wells being drilled and completed over a relatively short period of time.  Operating companies want to get the maximum recovery of hydrocarbons without having too much "communication" between wells (frac cylinder overlaps).  This approach does use "pressure walls" or undrilled slots or uncompleted wells between wells undergoing completion operations.  I know this approach is being employed in the Permian Basin but have not read anything about it being used in the Haynesville Shale Basin as yet.

I think that you are correct and I had the wording wrong.  We are just East of 2 wells that just came on line,(Titan), and we will have 2 wells that they are supposed to start drilling this month (Vulcanadon) and then there is one well to the East of us (Velo) that should be online soon or may be on line already.  Our wells will be the Vulcanadon and they are supposed to have a second set of wells for Vulcanadon but I have not seen the paperwork filled for it yet but the title searches for it should be done by now. 

I may be wrong but I think he said that this would not be real deep, 300 ft is what I think he said.

Sounds like a micro-seismic monitor well.

Very shallow for microseismic - best info for this approach usually acquired by putting sensors in wells that are much deeper and closer to the depth where the frac is being placed.

Could these be some sort of pipeline monitoring wells? I have seen a lot of these ultra shallow wells permitted in many areas.

Well I am probably wrong on depth, I would imagine that this is a microseismic, we do not have any pipelines near us.  Where he is talking should be about a thousand feet from where the plat shows the bore to be going through.
