On Friday, the rig reported 11 days drilling ahead @ 3721'. Not much progress since last week.
Must have had some issues changing out to smaller drill string and bottom hole assembly et up. Plus casing point may have been a good time to do some rig repair and/or inspections. Figure they should blow this well down to TD in short order point forward.
Something is up. I expected the rig to reach TD in eleven days.
On Friday, April 13, the rig reported 18 Days at TD, 9530'.
I'm wondering if some of the slow progress was "science" related as opposed to mechanical problems. One of the interesting facts regarding the horizontal Brown Dense wells drilled by Southwestern was the lengthy process of completing individual stages with various designs and then judging flow back and a number of days flowing. The completion recipe seemed to be the missing piece of the puzzle. Then the experimenting with horizontal completions ceased and the last three wells drilled have been vertical completions.
The last entry in the well file is interesting:
4/10/18, REACHED INTERMEDIATE TD OF 9530'
Will be interesting if the TD part of the hole will include core acquisition plus some high end open hole logging. This would slow down time to get to TD and rig off location (and casing set).
Just sitting back and watching!
This is the first mention of an "intermediate TD" I've seen in any well file. And 9530' is shallower that previous completed TVDs in this immediate area.
Seems to indicate that operator has either had to set or planned to set a shallower casing string prior to reaching target TD.
Normal to be done in many plays due to hole conditions and/or problems drilling this section.
Allows operator a much easier time to get well to TD. Just more expensive!
Will be interesting to see hole size / casing size at TD. Hoping that they can set 5.5" casing to allow for max frac effort on completion
RM:
Possible casing set @ 9530' at base CV/Buckner/Top Smackover prior to final open hole drill for final 5½" i.d. into the Smackover?
That makes sense but that is pretty small hole to be drilling prior to setting casing. I think you need minimum 6.125" hole for 4.5" casing (but may be a bit off on that).
We should see soon as to what kind of casing is set to TD
RM:
Sorry - bad communication on my part. My thought was that initial casing run was cemented and set @ 10 3/4". Allows for intermediate drill run to a designed TD that would facilitate a set casing at ±7" i.d. to prep for final open hole drill facilitating caseout / tieback at 5½" i.d. below 9530' to final TD (approx. 500' into the U SMK / LSBD formation). I'm assuming that the intermediate string would provide for the third transition - but that's why I asked, also as an inquiry to anticipated completion / techniques per your are of expertise.
Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…

AboutAs exciting as this is, we know that we have a responsibility to do this thing correctly. After all, we want the farm to remain a place where the family can gather for another 80 years and beyond. This site was born out of these desires. Before we started this site, googling "shale' brought up little information. Certainly nothing that was useful as we negotiated a lease. Read More |
