When will one know if oil was struck?

When SWN decides to report it in a press release or corporate presentation.  They've produced some of their L SMK wells for up to a year without filing a completion report with the state.  In other words, it could be a while.  There is little doubt that they will strike oil.  The question is how much and is it enough to maintain SWN's interest in drilling more wells.

SONRIS Lite report of 9/23/2014:

09/19/14: MOVED IN NEW RIG: MONCLA RIG #91. 09/20/14: TESTED BOP'S. 09/22/14: RIH & GETTING READY TO DRILL.

Maybe the reason for the new rig is to better handle the expected high pressure. I heard that they almost lost control of the W-B discovery well just west of this well.

Note that Weiser-Brown is the operator of this well, not SWN.

Thanks for the clarification, obed.  I don't think that pressure is the reason for switching rigs.

So what would be the reason?

To bring in a smaller rig?  I can't think of a reason.  The SONRIS Well Scout report indicates that the rig will drill.  Just what is unclear.

SONRIS shows that intermediate casing was set to 8700 feet, which is 1000 feet short of their original projected measured depth and 400 feet above the perforations in the W-B discovery well, so presumably the new rig will drill this final portion. This still doesn't answer the question of why they changed rigs, but I do note that the blow-out preventer of the new rig can handle 5000 psi.

The " intermediate" casing may actually be the final casing string.  And the original rig is not needed for completing the well. No need to change out the rig to change the BOP.  If this is an open hole completion like the EXXON-MOBIL #2, the smaller rig will not be setting any casing just drilling the final few hundred feet of the open hole and then perforating.

The Word going around several other wells are planned in close proximity to both W B wells. You think they may be on to something?
Latest word on well is that its a flop. Anybody hearing the same news?

I guess you must have heard right, UP. The 10/1/14 Scout report from SONRIS Lite shows the following:

09/21/14: TOTAL DEPTH REACHED. 09/26/14: PREPARING TO P&A

This area really seems unpredictable.

The Lithium Connection to Shale Drilling

Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…
