This is why I started this because you think you know all the information about the event, but you don't until you talk to other people.
I also want to tell everyone thank you so much for responding to this discussion. I know we all have diffrent points of view but I love to hear them all. I value each persons opinion and you have the right to express it. That is why I started this discussion. So no matter what say what is on your mind and what you believe in.
Kudos and a good discussion.
I hate this as bad as anyone. It is terribe for the enviroment. What I hate more is the 11 men who will never go home to their families again. Think about that one if your son, father, brother, etc never came home again. This is a huge and terrible accident. But we all use fossil fuels everyday for everything. And if we do, how can you knock drilling. I have been on these rigs for 30 years and I am on one in Indonesia right now. As far as the commet about rigs staying the same in the gulf, they haven't been the same there for a long time. My company, an AMERICAN one, has been pulling all its rigs out of the gulf for severel years. Just to much political BS to drill there anymore. And it will get wose and we will get more dependent on foreign oil and oil and gas prices will RISE. R.I.P the fallen men of DW Horizon
Thank you for sharing
If a rig explosion could cause this many problems, what could a Hurricane do?
P.G.,

The drilling industry has weathered many hurricanes. Look at the aftermath of Katrina, Rita, Irene, and Gustav. All major events that did sever damage to offshore platforms.

The problem here is that for some reason, the safegaurds failed. There has been much talk of the acuostic valve, which if in palce may have worked, but who knows. Maybe after thousands of wells drilled it was only a matter of time, maybe it was human error or faulty equipment.
More thoughts on the potential effects & economic impact. I'll reserve comment for now on ecological & human impact as it wouldn't be pretty.

"The slick has forced the shutdown of the gulf's rich fishing grounds and could also spread to the busy shipping lanes at the mouth of the Mississippi River, tying up the cargo vessels that move millions of tons of fruit, rubber, grain, steel and other commodities and raw materials in and out of the nation's interior."

Let's stick to discussing this disaster without letting spiral into an argument. Obviously, feel free to disagree on issues, but let's keep it polite. Thanks.
What do you wan't to do, have ships, that are also prome to have oil spills, bring oil in from the Arabs so that we all go broke and strart riding byciles?
What I want is to reduce our "need" for oil. Arab oil, offshore oil, any oil.
The keyword is "reduce" because realistically, we are not going to eliminate the need until there is no more oil. By then, our energy source will be light beam...or something.
How to reduce the need? The Pickens Plan. Domestic natural gas.
