A day or two ago I watched something on the news about people on the Louisiana coast being upset about less than desirables working on the cleanup. I had to travel through Plaquemines Parish back in the early 70s to get to Venice. This is not a place where you want to get into trouble. They will lock you up and trow away the key, if they chose to.

This is true...Leander Perez was the man and it is for sure he was in charge.
I got hung with a second hitch, because of a hurricane that I had to ride out, before I could come in and had to ride back to Harvey, LA, with a dude that I didn't know very well. He took a hit of acid and we left Venice heading toward Harvey. Those aboard didn't know of his drug use until it was too late. That was a wild ride that we couldn't seem to stop. Lucky, we didn't die.
There are definitely some shady individuals 'down the road', but the Plaquemines Parish President will fight to the death for his community.

See Billy Nungesser
Ellis,

It's been a long time since I've heard 'down the road'. I grew up in da Parish, St. Bernard - for all you yankees who grew up North of I-10.

I remember the school in Boothville-Venice looked like a UFO.

Make sure when you are down there to stay off the neutral ground (one of my favorite expressions). Funny when I was younger I thought people were calling it the Nutria ground. (Can't imagine why?)

Also make sure you drop in a Schwegmann's and "make groceries".

Thanks for bringing up some memories.
Bobi, when I was a teenager living in Buras La, We used to say, Ya wanna go up the road or down the road! One road in, one road out! You were sure not to miss any of Your friends while cruising!
Bear Dog,

It was the same in St. Bernard.

Also, the rich folks lived "up the road". We lived "down the road".

Most of our neighbors were trawlers and trappers. I hope the area can recover.

It's absolutely a whole different world down there.
I go to venice everyday. nowadays its not like that. The days of the Judge perez are over. all the cops are child hood freinds of all the riverrats causing trouble. I know EVERYONE down the road. i love it. Ive been running my 24 ft boat for the epa now that most of my charters cancelled. Some of the oil in empire/ buras area is op nasty and thick.
you live down in venice? or up here, what you do for the EPA? sounds intersting, I wish I would have gone down after katrina, they say that's where it came across in buras. katrina first "touched doown" in buras I read way back. I would have liked to have gone down and seen what was left of these condo's I stayed at in 1998.
Guess I am telling my age, I was a welder on the refinery at venice (1965) and there was a big fight with some locals at the rex club...guess who went to jail, every one from No. LA. Kind of like being in mexico. The jail still at pointalahatche?
Ken:

After Katrina, the jail was moved up to Belle Chase. The parish got a 57 million dollar grant from the government and they are currently rebulding the jail on the east bank in Pointe-a-la-Hache.
I live in new orleans but have been fishing guide since college.( 12 years) in buras/venice area. I have a bunch of land in caddo parish that my grandparents left me. I get up to n.louisiana bout 4 times a year. Im working for EPA taking all kind of people to survey the oil or take pictures. Buras after the storm looked like hell. There was not one structure standing besides the empire bridge. I was down there on an airboat 8 days after katrina. Dead bodies, animals, dead fish everywere. I cant even begin to describe how bad it really was. If u didnt see it for urself, its impossible to grasp how bad it was. COMPLETE FAILER OF EVERYTHING. NOTHING SURVIVED. This spill could be the end of life as WE know it in southern plaq.
young land owner,

Are there beach areas with oil on or near them which are accessable to the public? I have developed some ideas which could be used to aid in cleanup efforts, but i need to field test them. And I need to know who I might contact to have these ideas considered. I have submitted couple of ideas to BP and they are supposed to be evaluating them. I am impatient and want to come down to field test other ideas to demonstrate to others that they are worthwhile.

Inasmuch as I grew up north of I-10 I am guily of being a yankee cajun (per bobi), I guess. I live in Phoenix, but have oil & gas production company operating in North La. I am ready to make a trip to La. to try my ideas, even though I have been down there 2 times in last 2 months, but only to N. La. In the 50's and 60's I did lots of seismic work in S. La. Makes me want to cry when I see current pictures of the area.

If you can offer me any suggestions I would appreciate it. Reach me via e-mail at calais0929@aol.com or this site. By phone @ (480) 993-8048 or (480) 515-2606

Thanks
