Does anyone know why the Blackstone Ivory 5 in Red River Parish was a vertical well?
Henry, I believe it is fault related.  The major fault running across much of 14N-9W appears to continue south into Section 5 - 13N - 9W.
So is this to hold acreage until they redraw section lines?  Can they hold the entire section with that well?

Henry, I think you mean redraw unit lines.  Yes, this vertical well will hold all the leases forced pooled in drilling & production unit HA RA SUQ.  Encana drilled the well to hold the leases and buy time for the LOC to address the problem of horizontal drilling through faults. IMO that time has come or will come soon for many units and sections currently not under unit order where faults exist.  The LOC's failure to act will cause more verticals to be drilled in situations like this.  It's an economic waste for the operator, the royalty owners and the state.

I posted a discussion on the subject recently.  It didn't draw a lot of interest.  I think it is a significant issue for mineral tracts subject to faulting.  I also think that the support of mineral owners for redrawing unit boundaries in the case of faults would be helpful to pressure the LOC to come up with a logical alternative to drilling verticals to HBP or uneconomic horizontals in an attempt to prove that the fault is a serious negative that should be avoided for the benefit of all parties.

Skip,

Regarding the major fault that you mention in 14-9, where does it run to and from?  Do you have a map that would show its general location?

The Petrohawk Haynesville Core EUR contour map shows the fault  runs slightly NE to SW and intersects sections 2, 10/11, 14/15, 21/22, 27/28 and 33 in 14N-9W.  It is one of the most prominent faults depicted on the map. The map has been posted to site on a number of occasions but the best way to look at it is to download it in pdf format from Petrohawk's website because that allows you to zoom in and out to obtain more detail.  I think I have a link somewhere.  I'll try to find it.

Try this link and look at Page 6.

Skip,

Which color shows the fault??

The ones that are sufficiently large to show a color are silver.  Others simply appear as a black line.  The majority of the NW LA faults have a NE to SW orientation although the angle is not exactly the same for all.
Skip, here is the HK-Bossier map on Google Earth.  I put the Blackstone Ivory 5 #1 so everyone would have a landmark.  The map is pretty fuzzy when blown up that large but you can see the "major fault".

Thanks, jffree.  I have had the opportunity to compare the Petrohawk map to a few proprietary company field maps.  Those fault locations were identical.  I  think that the Petrohawk map is as accurate to fault location as any that are publicly available.  As you mention this fault appears to be "major" based on its width compared to other faults depicted on the map.
At the request of a member interested in urban completions, I have edited the discussion post to bold those wells by field that are located in urban areas.
