Collecting Royalties

My grandparent is deceased, and my mom would have been her heir but she is deceased too. I am the executor of my mother's estate.

Is it possible for an Estate of my mother to collect royalty payments? Will the operating company cut a check to the Estate of Diane Boone, for example?

After my brother's passing, my attorney sent a letter & death certificate to O & G company advising them of death and asking that payments be held in escrow until the estate was settled. At that point we sent another letter with a copy of the judgement of possession and directing them to make payment to my brothers heir, his son. As we did not expect the estate to take a long time to be settled, we did not want the payments made to the estate itself and possibly complicate taxes. All this went smoothly, much to my surprise. I do not know for sure, but would suspect asking that payments be made to the estate would also be honored.

I also think the answer to your question is yes. Whoever is paying your Royalty needs to be notified of the Death. They will probably suspend payments until they get certain information (probably including a copy of the Will, if there was one, heirship information, etc) and a Tax ID Number for the Estate.
