Hi, looks like only one drilling locaton in Sabine, is that right? I have been reading about reduced supply, so this is one way to reduce it. What is the outlook for Sabine in the next few years, is this still a good producer of nat gas? With the LNG at Sabine pass will that get Sabine parish flowing again? Many of you are very knowlegeable so I am trying to get an outlook for the next couple of years. Thanks for your thoughts.

Bob, The Times assembles their weekly Oil & Gas News from the paper records of the LOC District 6 Office.  It is common for there to be some variance with the permits uploaded to the state O&G database, SONRIS.  In this case SONRIS lists one additional Sabine Parish location:

SABINE 01 244430 J O KIMBRELL 3 002 09-FEB-12 A236 004-07N-12W 9971 ZWOLLE 3527

It's not a Haynesville well.  Drilling will continue to decline in Sabine but probably not cease while there are some companies with leases needing to be drilled in proven areas and the financial ability to complete those wells at a loss in order to secure the reserves for future development.  It will take some years for export of LNG in substantial quantities and/or new domestic uses for CNG/LNG to ramp up demand.  In the meantime energy companies are moving to lower supply.  The Haynesville Basin has seen enough wells drilled to be largely defined.  From now on drilling will fluctuate depending on demand/price.  I hope a couple of years are sufficient to re-balance supply with demand.  My crystal ball is in the shop for repairs.  Good Luck.

Thanks for the insight, appreciate your reply.

Skip,

You said the Haynesville Basin has been largely defined.  I'd be interested in your opinion of the boundaries.  Would you share?

A VP for Encana made that statement referring to the wells drilled by both Encana and SWEPI.  He didn't describe boundaries or provide a map.  The comment was made in reference to dropping considerable leasehold in the SE corner of the Play specifically in Natchitoches and Red River Parishes.  The term ECA used was "high grading" which I take to mean expending capital to retain only acreage that meets certain requirements.  A general comment made at the same time was that clay content increased as you go north and west in the basin.  Since his topic was the south and east corner of development at that time I took it to mean that at some point too little clay could negatively affect hydraulic stimulation.  The wells drilled in that area varied greatly in IP (one was Plugged and Abandoned) and production history showed rapid declines.  ECA's decision could also be based on temp/depth, faulting or on a thinning HA interval approaching Natchitoches Island.

FYI, The Camterra Haynesville sand well in NSS_RR field is re-completion of an old well. Also worthy of note is XTO has applied for 4 SMK C well locations in S2, T23N, 9W

Skip,

I read article dated 2/2/2012 titled:  "Comstock Resources to End Operated Haynesville Shale Development," by March 2012. (written by Eric Fox)   Comstock "ending all operated drilling," article states.  And, Comstock to take an "impairment" charge against "some of its nat gas prices due to the decline in natural gas prices.  The company plans an impairment charge of approx. $61 milllion or $.86 per share after tax(es)."

Article states that Comstock will finish a few projects (13.3 net wells) and drill last of 5.3 wells in HS area, and then that's it.

I also don't get the Comstock applications for HS wells with 1,300 plus acres in a Unit application?  To me, that would "water down" the royalty owner's mailbox moneys to nothing at today's prices, let alone, be quite "insufficient" per draining "section." ???

Yes, Dr.  I've read the reports on Comstock shifting their development dollars out of the Haynesville Play.  There are a number of HA drilling units by multiple operators greater than a section (640 acres).  Some have very good reasons for the larger units with lakes and faults being good examples.  I understand concerns of dilution by mineral owners but in an age of unconventional reservoirs and horizontal drilling large units are a fact of life.  It is also worth noting that larger units qualify for more wells so in theory the difference in royalties over the life of the unit is approximately equal.  Considering the current price trend, personally I'd gladly take more wells over a longer length of time in a larger unit.

And, with larger units, you (in theory) might get more gas out of the ground.  The operator can drill in that 330' next to the section line, that is prohibited in 640-acre units.   I'd be happy to have that lateral running the full length of my section -- I'd get 660' more of lateral.  That could be almost 15% more gas.

Skip, Henry,

Always a bright side somewhere.
