I own property in Northern LA and have been offered a lease, I read a lot of your posts and everyone suggests get a lawyer first. I am new to this and have looked on line for attorneys (oil & gas) there are so many how do you pick one? Does anyone have any reccomendations or know an attorney that they have dealt with who knows what to do? Before I sign a lease I want to make sure that I Know what I am signing and what I am getting into, because this seems that it wiil be on for a long time. Please help, Thanks.

I would recommend Davidson, Jones & Summers, APLC, in Shreveport.  Both Randy Davidson or Grant Summers are experienced in representing land/mineral owners.  There are a number of law firms with extensive O&G experience  in NW. LA. however the majority have client relationships with major energy companies.

I am very happy with my O&G attorney Pinky Palmer in Marshall, Texas.

Eva has stated that her property is located in N. LA.  Mineral law is significantly different between Texas and LA. (and Arkansas for that matter) and the plays and operators are often different.  It is advisable to engage legal counsel from those experienced in the Mineral Code of the appropriate state and it's even better if they have experience with historic and current development activity in the specific locale.

I know that but I have been in Palmer's office and know that he communicates and co ops with attorneys in Louisiana ... I would take your advice when it came to one...your being a land man.

One reason I am so comfortable with my choice (secured b/c of advice to find an O&G attorney by YOU) is that when I met with the land man from Samson and referred him to my attorney he said that I had gotten one of the best and he had dealt with him (not looking forward to it b/c Palmer knows the business) many times before.

Of course you can choose to rely on your Texas attorney to get advise from an associate in another jurisdiction.  However, I would not.  Better to have your TX attorney refer you to a LA attorney and deal directly with them if your legal needs regarded LA minerals.

I am working with Davidson, Jones & Summers in Shreveport regarding and oil and gas lease on my property in Claiborne Parish.  Specifically, I'm working with Lake Hearne and Randy Davidson.  I am very pleased with them.

I am very pleased with Randy Davidson as well.

I agree with Skip, if your property is in Louisiana, go with a Louisiana attorney.  If you are headed to New Orleans from Shreveport, going through Dallas AIN'T no short cut.  IMHO.

Thanks for all the good info I will continue to view all responses and make a decision pretty soon again thanks.

I had an appointment with Randall Davidson last Wednesday about an oil/gas lease I have received from JB Land services for acreage in North Bossier Parish.  I have been very please with Mr. Davidson.  I would just make sure the attorney didn't have a conflict of interest.  Good luck in leasing.
