The first new wells are being drilled in the Ashland Field and the initial new well is completed and will be reported in the very near future. Obviously Aethon thinks it will be a good well since the company is drilling the second well and holds a permit for a third. Here is a cut and paste from SONRIS covering all three. Our members with drilling experience will need to decipher all the driller report abbreviations. The hyperlinks are functional for those that wish to see additional detail. The
HA RA SUL;WEYERHAEUSER 4-9 HC permit is for six months and expires 6/25.

Permalink Reply by Rock Man on April 19, 2022 at 5:00 Good looking well on an IP basis.
Surprisingly low water rate (6 BWPD) on IP / would have thought a lot more due to post frac fluid flowback volumes
Production decline now the post important aspect moving ahead
Thanks for posting
Skip, There is a notice in the Natchitoches Times, that list a meeting to discuss a request by Ashtec Water Service, Kilgore, Texas, Docket No ENV 2024-01 for E&P Wast disposal well in Section 16, Township 13 North, Range 7 West. This is a good indication, to me, that there is more drilling planned around Ashland, LA. The section we are in was in the process of being leased by Chesapeake and then suddenly dropped, a few years back. What are your thoughts on this? Thank you!
Skip, With the Japanese oil/gas companies buying out Aetheon will this possibly affect further development of the Ashland field?
Permalink Reply by Skip Peel - Mineral Consultant on February 24, 2026 at 14:33 Good question. Aethon was running low on well locations and they still held some leases in the Ashland Field. SONRIS isn't working currently but my spreadsheet shows two Haynesville wells producing and two plugged and abandoned. It is possible that Adamas Energy/Mitsubishi might revisit Ashland. If I see a new permit, I will post it.
Thank you, Skip! I hope there will be a renewed interest in Ashland, and help that area.
Skip, Have you read the Oil & Gas news in the Natchitoches Journal? Part of the article said there are three additional applications just South of Ashland. Also 300 square miles of 3D Seismograph from Natchitoches into Sabine Parish. Seems to me that the Oil & Gas companies are trying to get more potentially productive sites leased for future drilling and not more wells producing, at this time, because of the over abundance of gas predicted for 2026 and 2027. Not sure if I mentioned, before, that Chesapeake did 3D Seismograph from Ashland all the way through Goldonna and even into Winn Parish, a number of years ago. Never heard anything about the results.
Permalink Reply by Skip Peel - Mineral Consultant 21 hours ago Thanks, I don't read the Natchitoches Journal. I thought the Natchitoches Times was the major newspaper and I'm surprised that there are enough readers to support two newspapers. Did the journal specify where the three additional applications are located south of Ashland? That covers a lot of ground.
Local news departments haven't had anyone on staff for decades that knew the first thing about the O&G industry. I'm old and when I was growing up there was a regular O&G column in the newspapers written by reporters who knew their was around a rig and the industry. We lost that forty or fifty years ago.
Yes, Haynesville focused companies are prospecting for additional well locations because they have developed a lot of the areas where they started out. The Chesapeake seismic shoot and the early wells they drilled in the Ashland field make me wary. If that 3D showed anything positive, Chesapeake would not have abandoned the field. And any operator interested in the field could have acquired that seismic data by now.
I looked at the Journal website and read through the article you mentioned. I'll put a link below for anyone who would care to read it. It lacks specifics that are important for forming an opinion. There is no mention of the company or companies taking the leases mentioned nor the section-township-range locations. Those specifics are available in the memorandums of lease filed in the public record. Either someone doesn't know that is important specifics or they are deliberately not publishing that information. Once again, I am wary.
I wish I could be more optimistic but I do not see any reason to be at this point in time. Hang in there.

The print outs at the bottom of the Natchitoches Journal article shows some specific locations from the Sabine line East towards Natchitoches. I am not well versed in the Oil & Gas production, but I follow where the plays are heading. Below the city of Natchitoches the O&G is slowly going East. I also see in Bienville Parish the O&G is going East. Both Parishes are being explored at the R8W and R7W. In Goldonna we have some land with some above a huge salt dome. No O&G company has been able to get through the estimated 1,000 foot thick salt layer. Have there been any successful Oil or Gas found where salt domes exist?

AboutAs exciting as this is, we know that we have a responsibility to do this thing correctly. After all, we want the farm to remain a place where the family can gather for another 80 years and beyond. This site was born out of these desires. Before we started this site, googling "shale' brought up little information. Certainly nothing that was useful as we negotiated a lease. Read More |
