I am going to the Bossier Parish Courthouse to find what has lead a landman to me. I need a copy of the record that shows how this property/mineral interest has been pasted down through the years. It goes back many many years. Can someone give me advice on where to start, what to ask help for, or other advice. Thanks

If you want to know the whole story bring the title forward from patent. Go to the BLM web site and look for the patent or to the Louisiana State Land Office and find who the patent was to, then run the land title forward from the beginning of the records using the vendor index. You can also chain backwards using the vendee index, starting with your name chain back to where you got the property, then chain back to find where they got the property and keep doing the the same until you get as far back as you want to go, then take the title forward using the vendor index. I would go with the patent forward approach.
Two Dogs,
Thank you for your reply. My visit to the courthouse did make me aware of the fact that the landman is trying to give me two times my actual interest. I suppose this mistake will be caught somewhere down the line. But it makes me wonder about the landman.
When I go to the BLM web site to look for the patent, do I use the name of the oldest/deceased relative that I know? Please excuse my ignorance.
Hardage,
That's funny!! I have to admit, I was wondering how to get by with that. Ofcourse, I'll never sign THEIR lease so maybe I can have an accceptable lease ready before landman figures it out.LOL
