How does this work?

I got an email telling me that there were a couple of new posts in this group, and it had a link to get me here. So now I'm here, and all I see are a bunch of very old threads.

Stephen, your are posting on the Main Page, "Shale Related Topics", but it seems you are asking about notice emails for a "group".  Notice emails are not sent for posts on the Main Page but are sent for new activity in each group.  When you get a notice and find no new post or reply, the notice is simply related to a new person joining that particular group.  Each discussion thread has an option to "Follow" if you want to keep up with new activity.  Once you have made a reply in a discussion, you are automatically "Following".  I hope this explanation helps.

If there is nothing new in the discussion forum remember to look below that at the comment wall.
