The word
The basis for the engine is the four-cylinder supercharged Kompressor engine (163hp) modified with added injectors on the underside of the intake manifold to inject natural gas. The car runs on unleaded premium gasoline or compressed natural gas (CNG).
The output and torque remain the same whether running on petrol (gasoline) or natural gas. In gasoline-only operation, the E200 gets 29mpg (combined, US) and in CNG operation it 5.5kg/100km.
Gasoline range is 454 miles and CNG range is 224 miles (19.5kg storage) - these can be combined, given the dual-fuel capability.
And so ... A management system allows for on-the-fly switching from gasoline to natural gas, even while the vehicle is in operation and moving.
