Sorry to post negative stuff, but this is something we should be aware of.  It's the latest accusation against fracking and natural gas. It sounds so crazy that it's tempting to laugh and ignore it. But, I think this idea will spread - perhaps the mystery illness will spread too.

Natural gas and fracking is starting to be blamed for the LeRoy New York mystery illness that has mainly been seen in teenage girls.  I've been following this story because I spent many years working in community mental health. Blogs are starting to burn with speculation that natural gas could be the cause.  I bet the national news will soon pick it up.  This is scaring a lot of parents in New York state and they are looking for answers.

Most neurologists believe the girl's illness is psychological.  In olden days it was called "mass hysteria". However, today we have a PC name for it, "Conversion Disorder" (sounds like a religious problem)  It really means a physical response to stress or trauma. The CDC has seen this sort of thing a lot of times and keeps track of them. But, many people do not want to believe that social media and publicity could be causes.  Parents want to find a culprit outside of the girl's (and one boy) heads.

Personally, after reading a number of stories about LeRoy, I think the teen's problems are psychological.  If it's something in the environment then why aren't more boys and older people also getting this disorder?  This case in New York will be followed because so many people are interested and so many people disagree with the psychological diagnosis.

I pasted it here because it is a good representation of how wild this debate is becoming.  The next link is to a Google search for websites talking about the LeRoy Mystery Illness and "natural gas".  There are over 8,000 hits, most of which are blogs.  I would not be surprised to see this "illness" spread to other schools where there are natural gas operations nearby.  This "illness", whatever it is, scares parents and everyone is looking for the answer.  Natgas is now being blamed.
