Could anyone tell me how long on average it takes for a well to start drilling after the permit is granted? Our well was permitted in mid October and SONRIS still shows no drilling. I know SONRIS is delayed a bit

Frank, I do not think there is a good answer to your question of average time permit to spud.  Operators may apply for a six month or a twelve month permit.  And since drilling time to Total Depth has decreased steadily over the course of development, SONRIS may not show a spud even when the rig has TD'ed and moved off.  Several members subscribe to proprietary rig tracking services, I use RigData, that are much more timely.  The reports are weekly and published late on Fridays.  Your best bet will be to post a question asking if a rig is drilling in a specific section - township - range and let someone check their weekly report.
Skip, heck the information is available on this site.

Skip, so RigData and others may be only a week out?  I might be able to get info via that site that generally takes Sonris 3 months to post?

The reports are current each Friday when published as far as I know.
Frank, it is a function of location within the play and the operator involved.  Check the Drilling Rig Locations Group to see how many rigs your operator is currently utilizing.  Also compare the spud date for your operator's currently drilling wells to their permit date.  Especially check the operator drilling rigs in your immediate area.
