WASHINGTON – Interior Secretary Ken Salazar says he will issue a new order imposing a moratorium on deepwater drilling after a federal judge struck down the existing one.

Salazar said in a statement Tuesday evening that the new order will contain additional information making clear why the six-month drilling pause was necessary in the wake of the Gulf oil spill. The judge in New Orleans who struck down the moratorium earlier in the day complained there wasn't enough justification for it.

Salazar pointed to indications of inadequate safety precautions by industry on deepwater wells. He said he would issue a new order in the coming days showing that a moratorium is needed.

The White House also is appealing the judge's ruling.

Well that didn't take long. You knew the Obama Administration wasn't just going to sit idle and let this happen.
If the goal is to trash the industry and the economy they are doing a good job, and let's not forget about "cap and trade".
I honestly can't help believing the Obama administration's true motives are becoming more obvious with everything they're doing - from not taking advantage of countless offers for help in dealing with the oilspill to pushing for a moratorium numerous experts have said is not necessary. This moratorium simply doesn't make sense and the more people think about it, the more they're going to question the real motives.

How many thousands of offshore drilling operations have been operating in the Gulf forever and until the Deepwater Horizon tragedy none had caused such a disaster?

I think it's wrong. If Obama really wanted to not only save jobs but employ more people he could hire thousands of new well inspectors. This all strikes me as pure manipulation to achieve his agendas.
i'm fairly convinced this bunch thinks they do the right thing most of the time. this is one of those situations that they really need to reconsider.
"True believers" who think they're doing good are always the worst villains.
mac that is precisely what scares me the most about this administration.
re. "...none had caused such a disaster."
I don't think it's so much a matter of having a disaster, it's more a matter of the scope of the impact from this disaster.

re. "...he could hire thousands of new well inspectors."
There is a base camp of taxpayers who don't want more or trust government employees now as it is, they want government downsized. Hiring thousands more may only add to their grievances.

Like Obama is worried about grievances?
What about grievances of all those who are signing those petitions to stop the ban?
And how much less impact could it have been had they waved the jones act and responded to this emergency like it really WAS an emergency?
Punishing even more Louisiana citizens over this spill in the name of protecting them makes no sense...
So, you feel confident that all of the inspections were sufficiently completed, that there is no longer any potential for another problem, that Gulf coast lands & citizens can be 100% guaranteed of no further devestation?

Nothing is ever 100% guranteed. I have been in the oil biz for 30 years and we have been pretty safe. MMS just do their jog and inspect and let us drill.
Thank you, RR. At this point I'm afraid that we're so polarized about this that we're paralyzed about doing our best. Seems we just can't find that "middle ground" to move things forward.

they're not going to back off, the pressure from the base is on hot and heavy. i'm reading more and more articles from greenies that see this as an opportunity to "move forward" at the expense of domestic oil. presumably toward things like biofuels and windmills.

The Lithium Connection to Shale Drilling

Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…
