Your reply is interesting as I have read on GHS that CHK may be leasing in SE Union County and SW Ashley County (areas pretty much north of the area you are describing).  There have also been some suspicious vertical wells drilled in this area that have been passed off as regular SMK wells.  No completions that I have heard about.

 

Also, I remember reading about a well in Union Parish from mid 2009 that was said to be a brown dense well.  I do not recall any follow-up on this well.

Yes, I've read the CHK rumors too.  There has been nothing posted that would tend to lend credence to them.  Have you reviewed the data available through the AOGC database on those suspicious wells?  I'll look at Union Parish for the well you mention.

 

There were three wells drilled in Union Parish in 2009.  Two just over 10,000' that were plugged and abandoned.  One reached 9100' and drilling was suspended.  That was almost two years ago.

Those are all LA wells so you can look on SONRIS. I did look up all the info at one time and something led me to believe they were the bottom portion the SMK but I don't feel like looking it all up again tonight:) Maybe tomorrow. Plus I don't like the new documents interface on SONRIS. I could look up information a lot faster with the old program.

 

 Skip you're right that there is no concrete evidence that CHK is one of the companies involved in the leasing. The closest thing I have is rumor, their CEO's mention of a new liquid play, and Greystone drilling these wells.  I'll try to get some solid evidence one way or the other though.

There were 2 or 3 drilled to 9000 - 9100' and later reported as P&A.

Yes, as there were rumors that they were brown dense wells.  One that was NW of Crossett. AR was written about on GHS before it was drilled and had no follow-up.  This latest well application along state line in Union County is listed as 9400' and is farther south than the Crossett well.

Aubrey,

 

You've been working the SMK area for a long time. What kind of outfit would not use stainless steel or other appropriate equipment for one of these wells? We've known for 60 years that the SMK produces a lot of H2S. I've never heard of 2% anywhere except down in Mobile but I guess it's possible. You can't tell me someone would make a  mistake like this after investing $6million to drill a well.

 

The other issue is the reckless spending by the O&G companies in leasing this play. Gayle said EOG/Borders aka Schoeffler energy ran as fast as they could from the first dry well in Lafayette county yet just a month ago a rep from Schoeffler called me and wanted to lease my land. I guess EOG wants to drill another dry hole so they can have some more tax write offs or maybe they just forgot about the horrible dry hole they just drilled. Heck, with over a million acres leased at an average of $200/acre ($200,000,000) they can brag about those tax write offs in their investor presentations which I'm sure will impress Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, et al. Here's an idea. Just lease the whole state of LA. Odds are you'll hit something but if everything is dry you can just write it off on your taxes.
