UT Officials Resign in Wake of Fracking Study Controversy

Here we go Ladies and Gentlemen.  I fear this is made to order for... you know what's coming next.

Resignation and Retirement Result

The long-awaited review of a controversial study on the drilling process known as hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” was released today, and it finds numerous errors and flaws with how the study was conducted and released, as well as University of Texas policies for disclosing conflicts of interest.

The head author of the study, Dr. Charles “Chip” Groat, has retired in the wake of the controversy, and the head of the Energy Institute that released it, Dr. Raymond Orbach, has resigned, the University announced today.

This is very bad and could have been easily been avoided if he had done the smart thing and disclosed that he was on the board of an O&G company.  That was public info and was bound to have been found out. This was Stupid and it hurts all of us.

You're correct.  But i'm still hopeful facts will outweigh the bad judgements/actions of others.

Very good!  Thanks for that!

jhh

Doesn't UT have ethics training??? Anyone, with half a brain, knows that if you have a conflict of interest, you don't participate in a study like this. It is unbelievable that this guy can be so naive to claim that people should ignore the fact that he has ties to the oil and gas industry, and believe him, simply because he says he can ignore his ties while doing his work.

I could rant on this forever, but I'll just shut up for now.

i agree.  Had to take an extra blood pressure pill yesterday after reading the article.  Truly amazing.  we have so much good ahead of us and this happens.  jhh

I've met Mr. Groat - he was head at the USGS when the Yucca Mountain project got killed.  I don't think he knew the hornet's nest he was getting into.  Yes, he should have clearly disclosed his oil and gas position, but from what I know of the man, the data is sound.

Excellent!    Then we should stand with him and his study.  Let those who challenge the study prove it... or tell them to shut up.

That's the funny thing about this - to date, I don't think anyone has really challenged the conclusions in a scientific fashion.  Its all been character assassination. On Yucca Mountain, he was USGS head when he learned that 6 years prior employees may have mis-represented data.  He handled it like a man.  http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/technologyandresearch/a/yuccalies.htm

Private industries, universities, and the government has long worked together in the name of progress.  Quite often, the best qualified people are involved in all three.  Most of the time this doesn't matter, other than the politics of someone's agenda.

The Lithium Connection to Shale Drilling
