Leasing land to oil companies

I own 60 acres of timberland in Vernon Parish. We recently received a rather low offer to lease our land at $150 an acre for 5 years with 20% royalties. I would like some input by other landowners who have received similar offers from oil companies.

Personally, I don't like the 5 year term, but $150 & 1/5 is very good for Vernon parish.

I WAS CONTACTED ALSO WITH THE SAME OFFER. WE LIVE IN THE PICKERING AREA. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS INTEREST IN LEASING IS RELATED TO THE TUSCALOOSA SHALE FORMATION?

I disagree with Checkmateking............It definitely is Tuscaloosa Marine Shale according to Mary L. Barrett, Ph.D., Professor Emeriti of Geology, Centenary College of Louisiana who presented at the Ark-La-Tex Association of Professional Landmen on Feb. 12, 2011.  "The mapped TMS trend runs east-west across central Louisiana and into Miississippi.  The TMS is fractured and over-pressured, and commonly live oil is present in its fractures.  Its abrupt resistivity increases in the section of interest (which) is believed due to active petroleum generation, a characteristic common to other source rocks.  A few old vertical wells are documented as producing from this shale.  Distribution of petroleum fields in this region suggest the peak oil to wet gas window may occur at depths of 12,000-14,000 feet.

A map included in Dr. Barrett's presentation had the TMS sweeping in a slight arc from Vernon and Beauregard on the west side of La. and moving eastward through Rapides, Allen, Evangeline, Avoyelles, St. Landry, Concordia, Pointe Coupee, West and East Feliciana, East B. R., St Helena, Livingston, Tangipahoa, Washington, and St. Tammany.  Some of  listed parishes have only a portion of the parish in the trend according to Dr. Barrett's map.

Well I stand corrected, never too big to admit when I am wrong, I thought the TMS was confined to the Florida Parishes, nice work Spring

Swift Energy and I was told they are mining for Austin Chalk.
