Chesapeake Scores Rare Sell Rating per Argus analyst Phil Weiss 11/17/2011

The Wall Street Journal Nov. 17, 2011

"Chesapeake Scores Rare Sell Rating"

http://blogs.wsj.com/deals/2011/11/17/chesapeake-scores-rare-sell-r...

"In a scorching critique, Argus analyst Phill Weiss downgraded Chesapeake Energy Corp. to sell, from hold, citing skepticism about the oil and gas producer's ability to lower debt and slow spending, 'off-balance-sheet debt,' and ownership structure that's 'becoming more and more convoluted.'"

"...Weiss writes in a nine-page research note published Thursday.  Rather Chesapeake is an amalgamation of an oil and gas explorer, a financial firm and an oilfield services company, he says.  He worries that it is becoming 'a jack-of-all-trades and master of none'..."

Well, we will have to see if Mad Money's Cramer or the Argus analyst Phil Weiss.  Cramer WANTS to believe in NG and Aubrey.  He wants things to work out like CHK's plans/dreams.

I went looking for the analysts 9 page research note but was unable to find it.  That would be interesting.  he's the lone sell out of 32 analysts.

"Chesapeake, in fact, can no longer be considered an exploration and production company, Weiss writes in a nine-page research note published Thursday. Rather, Chesapeake is an amalgamation of an oil and gas explorer, a financial firm and an oilfield services company, he says. He worries that it is becoming “a jack-of-all-trades and master of none.”"

HANG,

I believe one can "purchase" those research reports, or subscribe to services for same.  The public just gets a tidbit, and the downgrade/upgrade info.

Here's another article on CHK's stock...."Three Stocks I'm Ready to Dump"

Having said this, the fact is that you can find far more articles that recommend buying CHK than you can find articles recommending you sell it.  But, that's true for almost any stock.  Almost nobody ever recommends a sell.

I wonder what would happen to CHK's stock if there was a successful class action lawsuit over the way they treat mineral owners? Is that an accident waiting to happen?

Henry and P.G.,

IMO, It matters not what CHK's McCLendon insists is CHK's "potential" earnings.  Today, analysts say CHK has over $15 Billion in debt load and still spending like mad, even after McClendon's (again) insistance a year ago that CHK was going to hold down spending and land deals.  CHK has done just the opposite.  And CHK's cash is almost non existent for such a debt load and operations schedule. So, I believe the analysts are getting nervous and want to see the GRAND Wealthy Picture that McClendon says sits right past his reach...but he can reach...  I think stockholders are getting nervous too.  Time will tell.

Personally speaking,  I wish him and CHK well.  I just wish CHK and Mr. McClendon had the same soft sentimental feelings toward my mineral participation in/contributions to CHK's and Mr. McClendon's successful efforts.  But that isn't happening. LOL

The more CHK pushes against my determined efforts to see well CapEx and well "net revenue" and "total revenue" numbers that are correct, and the many different CHK "interpretations" for "well-payout" status numbers that I believe are made in "Hollywood," and the more CHK refuses to answer legitimate questions as to my mineral moneys/payments/expenses used in their "well program," the more I am going to pursue them for the corrections.  CHK's deliberate, consistent, and continual...let me say..."tweeking" of well accounting numbers, and CEMI accountings for the lowest $/mcf numbers, etc., are suspect, to me, and many others.  I am tired of being "HOODwinked," and I believe CHK stockholders are too.  CHK has had the use and abuse of my and many other millions of mineral estates/moneys to pursue Mr. McClendon's agenda.  Our Moneys support and grow Chesapeake Energy just as much as Mr. McClendon's, if not more.

I want the accounting "abuses" to stop, be repaired, and CHK reprimanded for them where they exist.

I don't single out CHK for any other reason than that is with whom my minerals lay, and I get no accountings from other Payors.   I can only opine per my mineral accountings/dealings with Chesapeake Energy.

Accident waiting to happen...  No, none of this is by accident.

sesport II,

I have too...

sesport II,

T. Boone sold off 45% of shares/stake in CHK. (?)  He bought XOM and Devon...

Of course, nat gas prices are killing these investments.
