By 2010, however, industry enthusiasm for new nuclear plants began to wane as the recession cut into electric demand, costs for nuclear construction soared, carbon legislation was delayed and natural gas supplies began to rise, making nuclear plants less competitive.
Exelon withdrew its COL application, but continued to pursue the early site permit to allow it to keep the project alive but defer construction for as long as 20 years.
"Today's withdrawal brings an end to all project activity," Exelon said in a statement.
"This is all about the economics of the project, which are driven by commodity and financial markets," said Marilyn Kray, vice president of nuclear project development.

Permalink Reply by Hopeful About Natural Gas on Party Time!! This makes me want to celebrate I've never trusted nuke power and natgas is a much better way to go. We got a big lift from the new CO2 studies that showed a 20% reduction already from the switch from coal to natgas plants - that is a huge shift and quick too!
Just to keep the party going here is some good news (for us) about "clean coal" ... University of Oregon researchers using a dept of energy grant have come up with a way to vastly reduce polution from coal - it only raises the cost by 25%. I may be using the word "polution" broadly.
Note that this 25 per cent is on top of other costs of "clean" coal's extraction. To be fair new technologies that will reduce polution from natgas like propane for fracking will also cost more - but I don't think propane (which can be recaptured) will cost anything like 25% of the total.
