Skip this is not true.  Under setting you have the choice of receiving emails from your groups and numerous other email options.  I personally choose not to receive emails, because when this site was busier my email in-box was overwhelmed.  I don't know what the default setting for new members are, in regard to emails.

Also this topic was just brought up over at EagleFord Forum and Keith mentioned the cost of an updated search function.

Good question for Keith to answer, tc.  GHS has had, and I believe continues to have, differences with the other websites that were created later.  I've never had to do anything beyond joining a group to get the notice emails.  That could have changed at a later date as I've been a member of all my groups for a long time.  I'm not a member of eaglefordforum so I can't access the discussion you mention through your link.

Note: Emphasis added to Rule 2 is my own.  It's a situation that comes up regularly.  I'll add my two cents to Keith's explanation.  Websites make money, in part, by the number of members and the amount of activity.  Posting a link to a competing website is taking advantage of Keith's hard work to boost another website's traffic. Those who wish to solicit may do so on Keith's site, ShaleForum.com.

I think under Rule 2, links to O&G corporate presentations should be allowed.  And no blog would mean no links to Kirk Barrell's Tuscaloosa Trend blog.  I think Keith does a great job balancing common sense with having rules.

What I like the most about this forum other than the great info, is that trolling is almost nonexistent.

Agreed, it's a fine line to walk.  Kirk's blog is informational; not for profit.  No ads.  Yes, links to press releases and presentations are not covered by Rule 2.  GHS has had it's share of trolls especially in the early days.  Keith certainly has been successful at keeping trolling to a minimum.

We regularly share news articles pertinent to members' interests. In those cases it's sometimes best to post an excerpt that is especially relevant and then to provide a link to the full article for those who would care to read what may be too long to post in full or may include less relevant topics. Posting links in and of itself is not prohibited.

When searching for wells by Section-Township-Range it is helpful to remember that wells are organized in the database by the section containing their surface location.  When dealing with horizontal wells the section being produced, and paying royalties, is quite often not the section with the surface location.  For these reasons it is easier to search for horizontal wells by leaving the section box blank and only filling in the township and range boxes.  This will pull up all the wells in a township by section. 

The first line of the Well Scout section of the Well File (the bottom one) gives the s-t-r of the surface location and the s-t-r of the bottom hole location.  The section with the bottom hole is the one being produced.  Another way to notice this situation is a well with a number in the name that is different from the section number of the surface location.  A well with the name Smith Etal 23H #1 which is listed under the wells in Section 14 is drilled from 14 into 23 where the lateral is perforated.  Although the surface location is in 14 the mineral owners in 23 receive the royalties.  Haynesville Shale wells are drilled on a north-south axis.  So if you are looking for wells in Section 15 for example, you need to look at wells with surface locations in Section 10 to the north and Section 22 to the south also.

GHS  has given me the confidence to talk to others in the Oil and GAS Industry. I did not know what "SHALE" was when I inherited my land.  Seriously, I felt ignorant, but GHS gave me the information I needed to a knowledgeable landowner with an interest in any possible plays.  It is a place I have connected and reconnected with family members and friends.  I have also found GHS to be a place of like minded humor and activities.  It has been a positive place for me.

UMI Basics by Caliente (kb) - Known by a succession of GHS member names Caliente is an attorney who was involved in protracted lease negotiations in the early shale days.  She researched and composed a comprehensive overview of Louisiana Mineral Code regulations governing Unleased Mineral Interests.  UMI refers to those mineral owners who are force pooled in a unit but who are not covered by a lease.  The subject comes up often but is complex and often misconstrued. BLOG (just under Looking For Something? search box on the Main Page)

A blog is an alternate form of post and differs from the discussion format in several ways.  Discussions have character limitations in the introduction and replies.  It is designed to facilitate open discussion.  Replies follow in sequence but the option exists to go back and insert a reply in previous portions of the discussion.  A reply may also be edited within a fifteen minute window.  A BLOG allows a more lengthy post and the replies are in sequence from latest to oldest.  You can not edit a reply.  The format is especially valuable when site experts seek to give comprehensive opinions on widely relevant topics.  And then take questions from members.  The BLOG format is not a replacement for the discussion format and newbies often get confused an make their first post in  the Blogs.  The Blogs are not readily apparent to the casual observer.  It gets a notice under Recent Activity and then can quickly rotate off the list having been seen by a small handful of members.  Here is a sampling of the topics covered in the GHS BLOGS.  Remember the site disclaimer applies here also.
