Is there an advantage to letting your lease expire rather than releasing to the company you originally had your lease with?

Yes, if you can get better terms than the original lease.

For me it would depend on how comfortable I was with who had my lease. If the lease is to expire , did they really do what you had hoped they would do initially ? Are they offering you a good lease this time around ? If not I would certainly consider checking around if it were me. If you are on the Haynesville shale, are they capable of drilling a horizontal well ?

There are many things that must be running through your mind. I can see how it could be beneficial either way depending on your circumstances. I know this probably isnt what you were looking for but I hope that it will at least give you some ideas to ponder. Have a good one.
Snake, Thanks for info. I have been checking around and I know that leasing is really down. Friend of mine with Encana says he is authorized to offer 1500 an acre in the Haynesville. CHK offered l250 first time and now are offering 1750. My property is in the Haynesville- 91 acres- just dont know if we'd get screwed if we turn down the 1750 and let the lease expire. Since August, CHK has been saying they are going to drill in our section but they let a 200 acre lease expire so they have to get it and mine leased before anything can be done. Dont know if I believe them or not.
I would say let it expire and trade again another day.
SOme of us are spoiled by spellcheck and grammercheck. I have had times that i have had to cut and paste out of my wordprocessor.

Got this link from Rosebud many moons ago from the SWAMO site. She and some of the "special" people around here were going on a virtual reality internet trip to China to find some 42" gas pipe.
At $1750 on the Haynesville, you would be getting screwed if you took it !..... a much better deal if you let it expire. After learning what I have about this process and the monies involved, $1750 wouldnt get the top 100 feet of my property. I know this will offend many but thats just the way it is. We have been mislead for decades about the true wealth of our minerals. Whether or not an amount was the norm or not is a total crok.Just as the days of the mom & pop stores are gone, so are the days numbered for low ball leases and small operators outside of farmout , IMO. Its no longer about fair market value to me because if they had been fair all these years we wouldnt be having this discussion. Its about doing the best for you and yours. Good luck in whatever you decide to do but I certainly hope you dont take the $1750. With you owning roughly 15% of the section, they need you to drill your section more then you need them. You have leverage to make the deal more favorable to you.Thats the name of the game. Dont waist your edge, use it to your benefit. Have a good one.
Be my luck if I walked away from a lease like that, the new government would nationalize the O&G industry and I'd get nothing.
Kind of like my luck of getting into those lines at walmart where something always happens where I have to wait. Once I told the folks behind me they made their mistake by getting behind me!
