So, I'm sitting here in my living room on my computer while my wife is watching her favorite show on the Hallmark Channel, it's When Calls the Heart, I'm totally uninterested....and then I hear the word "shale." So I perk up and start paying attention...apparently one of the running themes of the show is that oil has been struck and there is a legal battle brewing over surface and mineral rights. Anyways, this just might be the most interesting shows on the Hallmark Channel this year...that is until Christmas!!

In researching the decades-old Tuscaloosa Trend and the immense wealth it has generated for many, I find it deeply troubling that this resource-rich formation runs directly beneath one of the poorest communities in North Baton Rouge—near Southern University, Louisiana—yet neither the university ( that I am aware of) nor local residents appear to have received any compensation for the minerals extracted from their land.
This area has suffered immense environmental degradation…
