Sesport, I watched a progam a few weeks ago about mountaintop removal mining in Appalachia. It was and is absolutely tragic to see the consequences of this shortcut form of mining.
Les - It's a one horse show for these folks .. darned if they do & darned if they don't ... Catch 22. I'd bet they still shop at company stores, folks may or may not own the homes they bought through the company banks.

I remember when the "good old boys" fought so hard here to keep banking under tight control. Thankfully, that changed.

In researching the decades-old Tuscaloosa Trend and the immense wealth it has generated for many, I find it deeply troubling that this resource-rich formation runs directly beneath one of the poorest communities in North Baton Rouge—near Southern University, Louisiana—yet neither the university ( that I am aware of)  nor local residents appear to have received any compensation for the minerals extracted from their land.
