Here is a Wall St. Journal article on Ethanol. It's sort of an update on how much as been spent over both republican and democratic administrations and how few results it has yielded. It should be a study in unintended consequences.
.
What's missing from the WSJ article is OUR increased food costs and the world's decreased food availability. Common sense should tell us that we should not use food for fuel. We should be using natgas for this.
.
Oh, and nor does the article touch on the many, many complaints from auto drivers about ethanol added to their gasoline and increased costs.
.
Not to mention that people around the world have starved to death under this costly idea. The whole mess is just sad. So much effort on a fuel that had so many drawbacks from the beginning.

"An October 2011 report on biofuels by the National Academy of Sciences concluded that the mandates "may be an ineffective way to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions." Because production is so low, advanced cellulosic fuels also do very little to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil."

What they keep ignoring and failing to acknowledge is that ethanol damages all older and most newer motors if left in as unspent fuel. I did not know that and destroyed two Evinrude two stroke outboard motors and one lawnmower. We got 'stuck' with a 10% ethanol base in Oregon by our 'beloved' idiots in charge.
The ethanol breaks down into water when it sets, swells gaskets, degrades Orings and causes rusting in the fuel systems. Even with the 'additive' they sell to keep it from breaking down.
We have since discovered that several marine motor and boat companies will not honor warranties if any ethanol based fuel is used in either the fuel system or the motor.
Ethanol is just a bad idea.... sort of like the thought of using peanut oil as a fuel source was back when Jimmy Carter was President.
Yes, I live in Oregon too. I love the state, but it does do strange things politically sometimes. Ethanol is one of those.
.
Of course, so does Louisiana. lol!

FYI, Louisiana is several light-years ahead of Oregon with energy legislation.
Just sayin'....
Fuel from grain crops will not stop so long as companies like Monsanto are in bed with our politicians..regardless what party they are..
I started buying my fuel from one of the 'Ethanol Free' outlets for my 125HP outboards on my Blackhawk and they run great, no problems with bad start ups or hesitation when I goose them. Like you I pay more for it, but performance, dependability and engine life out weight that quickly.
Now I hear there is a drive by our Governor here in Oregon to shut them down or charge them a surcharge to sell non-ethanol fuels. No 'kick-backs' or 'special interest' there right, just good old fashion politics.
Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…

AboutAs exciting as this is, we know that we have a responsibility to do this thing correctly. After all, we want the farm to remain a place where the family can gather for another 80 years and beyond. This site was born out of these desires. Before we started this site, googling "shale' brought up little information. Certainly nothing that was useful as we negotiated a lease. Read More |
