Gas Shortage

Potential gas shortage over here in Dallas? C'mon now.

I got a similar automated call from Nueces Electric Coop on my cell today.  They provide the electric service for a property I have in South TX.  They are asking us to bundle up, quit taking  warm showers and quit running the dishwasher through Sunday .  How crazy is this?

Natgas at $4.3ish and they're running out.....I don't buy it.

Bacon, this is about capacity to move gas thru the distribution network - not gas supply from the wellhead.  All utilities run into this problem eventually, even in sunny Southern California.

Why can't they install bigger gas lines?

Linda, two reasons - 1) Gas distribution lines are in heavily populated areas and are not that easy to replace.  2) You don't size gas lines based on a once in 10 years peak gas demand.

Yea, my husband explained it to me.  He just retired from CLECO, and said they had the same problem during peak seasons.

Yeah, I know all about it.  I guess I found it kind of funny that a little cold snap could put pressure on the distribution system.  They're going to need a helluva lot more capacity to support a fuel switch for transportation.

Bacon, most systems could handle some level of fuel switching.  Large CNG stations would be located on the backbone that has larger capacity.  Home refueling is a smaller load that occurs overnight.  If the demand is more continuous the utilities can justify the investment to the respective commissions.

Plus the unwinding of "stability" in the Middle East and Persian Gulf  states!  It would nice to know how our allies are responding and preparing.

Boy... you have that right.... one of my friend (Aussie fishing forum) said that he tied huge tarps over the roof of his garage and house tied to logs in the hopes that his roofs don't blow off. He also said that his favorite fishing hole used to be three miles from his house, but it is now just 1/4 mile from him. Also said he is having problems with Croc's sleeping under his porch and in his garage.

He has his 26' boat tied to the house.... just sitting on the trailer bunks (just in case)

Your friend must be quite a daredevil.  Everyone I know packed up and drove down to Rockhampton two days ago.  Thank goodness this didn't turn out to be the major disasster expected.
