Attempting to kick off @ 10,555 ft. The TMS target is 13,100. Seems like a very long curve for the TMS. Could this be an Austin Chalk well or some type of hybrid (like a Eaglebine) ?

any thoughts?

ps.  more layers?

11/07/2012 06 11/06/12: TRIPPING IN HOLE W/ WHIPSTOCK TO 10,705'.

what does this mean

A"trip" is when drill pipe or other tools are being raised or lowered in the well.  In this case the driller is setting a whipstock at the kick off point of the lateral, 10,705'.  This is the beginning of "building the curve" in a horizontal well and the whipstock is an angled metal tool that deflects the bit and drill string in the direction the driller wishes to go.  After the whipstock begins the process of transitioning from vertical to horizontal wellbore the directional mud motor will continue turning the  wellbore in a radius designed to be roughly horizontal when the motor intersects the target formation.

skip, thank you,
what do you think they are trying to find?
are they doing laterals for austin chalk???
does it seem out of place or quite normal?

thanks

What is the well serial number?

Serial # 245249   api# 17079205390000

Permitted Horizon:  TMS.  Permitted True Vertical Depth (TVD): 14500', Measured Depth (MD): 19,500'.  Link to permit follows.

The permitted horizon is the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale.  Operators typically permit both TVD and MD to depths greater than they plan to drill especially  in areas where there is limited or no well control.  Early exploratory wells often drill pilot holes deeper than the target horizon for science reasons.
