Building on earlier comments @ play types. Whereas the AC and TMS are "repeatable plays" based on using frac stimulation to drill long horizontals and then "repeat" results due to the type of the reservoir one has in these two zones, the Tuscaloosa Sand and Wilcox Sand plays are finite and localized play types where O&G are only found in very small (e.g. 10 acres to a few hundred acres) traps. The rest of the section will tend to be wet with no O&G present.

Classic Wilcox Sand example in SW Mississippi - one well hits oil and has made over 100,000 BO in its lifetime. This discovery was offset in five different directions and never found any oil - just wet sands.

But shallower and fingerlike veins sticking up that they may or may not hit anything. Thanks for helping me understand geology.

So Wilcox is another play/level just like Austin Chaulk or Tuscaloosa?

Lisa I don't understand your question? Regarding the well you have been asking about you would need to know that this appears  to be a Wilcox test well. The Wilcox is nothing like the Austin Chalk. The AC is like a blanket covering the whole area whereas the Wilcox is like fingers sticking up. If you drill down and hit a finger you may make a good well. The chances of you hitting the finger are slim without a lot of high tech seismic work or just plain luck.

When oil companies are acquiring thousands of acres, are they purchasing rights to that area & is all this acreage already leased by seller?   If so, what type of rights, drilling and/or leasing?

  • Understood Skip, just good to know interest is still here.  Only if in the interest of Lessee & not Lessor for now.  Even in the mid 90s no one drilled as close to me as this one, but did lease my land up until 2000.  Did not know that any leases were still active in this area.

Lisa, please realize that if this is a "prescription" well, it will likely not be productive and will not result in additional exploration interest in the immediate area.  It will however hold the lease or mineral servitude in effect.

Thanks Skip for the prompt response!   Just a local land owner who followed this years ago & would be great to see activity in the area again.   I have 66 acres that is only about 2 miles from this site and they can put a well on my place anytime, lol.

It takes a few weeks for the state to enter report data in the online database.  If drilling has started then the rig should appear in today's rig report.  It will come out late this afternoon or this evening some time.

Has drilling already started on the Gordon/Wilcox 6800 well?  Rid was delivered over the last few days, road has been built into the site & something buried on rig side of road to creek area.  How soon until additional info will be posted on status of this drill?
