When the mineral estate is severed from the surface estate, in Louisiana law this creates a mineral servitude that is effective for ten years unless interrupted by a good faith attempt to drill a producing well.  A prescription well is one meant to reset the ten year clock and preserve the servitude.  It does not have to be a success to reset the clock.  There are certain requirements that must be met.  You can't just bring in a water well rig and drill down a 1000'.  The well must be permitted to a recognized horizon that could be considered potentially productive.  There are large acreage mineral servitudes in LA and the owners protect their investment by not allowing the minerals to prescribe to the surface owner.  They drill a prescription well.  As Jay mentions, this may be a little different than a servitude prescription.  There may be an expiring lease that require a well under a drilling clause.  I haven't had time to read the correspondence in the well file.

Just noticed the signs and I am within a few miles of that location and remember all the drilling and leasing from the mid 90's. Also know UL Lafayette received a huge grant back in April to pursue this trend.

ok,, so whats the difference between a test well and a prescription well??

The well is permitted to the 6800 Wilcox.  Considering the discussion on the Main Page, the rig is drilling now.

Gordon well looks to be a Wilcox test

The only well to that depth in that township was an old wildcat.  Since it was plugged and abandoned and never produced, there is no formation listed in the well files.  There is however a well log on file.  So, a good question for a geologist.  At least until the permit is entered in the database, probably tomorrow sometime.

I see there is a new permit in Rapides parish.  serial number 251222, well name Gordon holdings llc, Magnum Producing, measured depth 7000 feet.  Any ideas what this is?  T 01N, R02W and section 006.

I will give it a shot hydro but I usually wind up with a sprawled out mess. It is easy to look up though. Try the following:

Go to sonris

go to data access

go to lease sale and tract history

the July 11 date should be in a box-don’t choose any tract numbers-just hit the submit button. All of the tracts that are in the sale will be listed as well as The sections townships and ranges. You can preview now or the sale will be over pretty early-maybe 9 or 10 and the price per acre should be listed then.
