Now that the "Hall of Fame" has reached 100 wells I thought it may be a good time to update the list with the latest information. Fourteen different operators now have featured wells.

There are eight (8) parishes and counties with wells on the list with the top two being Red River (37) and DeSoto (31). Top operators are Petrohawk (28), EnCana (18), Questar (11), Exco (9), Chesapeake (8) and Comstock (7).

Texas now has three of the top four wells.

The list includes wells that had an initial rate above 20 MMcfd.

Thanks SB,

My pleasure - I probably haven't adequately acknowledged how helpful this community and its members have been to me.
great info thanks ledlights
And to bring us all back on topic, looks like Texas gets another one in the Top 20:

Nacogdoches County/ EOG-Murray Gas Unit 1-H completion report filed today:

- 24.921 mmcfd
- 25/26 Choke
- 8701 flowing psia
- 10,215 Shut-In psia

http://webapps.rrc.state.tx.us/CMPL/ogmappcontents/cmplcontents/pro...

P.S. - Les, greatly appreciate all of your efforts and insights here on GHS.
YAHHHHOOOOO for Nacogdoches County howled Jack Blake!!!
DG, it looks like Texas is coming on strong.
One thing for sure, there is no market for IP. Cumulative production on the other hand is $$$$ in the bank. I would think that in a majority of the time, large IP's, accompanied by large PSI's, translate into large cumulative productions. I said most of the time, because the Kardell # 1 is certainly an exception. Many assume the well was ruined by flowing it on too large a choke. It will be interesting to see how Encana's and EOG's wells in Nacogdoches and San Augustine Counties hold up. I'm guessing because of the high pressures that they will hold up well.
I believe that the Kardell was on pretty much an open choke as well, whereas these most recent wells have been moderately choked back in the 24/64 or 25/64 range but still with very strong pressure reported.

Devon has also reported that they are now choking back their most recent completions in efforts to preserve the long term health of the wells. Just how conservatively Devon's recent wells are choked is anyone's guess, as all of their post-Kardel IP reports are only listing the choke as "adjustable".
DG, the Kardell was tested on a 37/64" choke so was not an open choke. We now know this rate is not out of line with other wells in the area.

Devon, Kardell GU #1H Well, Serial #682268 , San Augustine  County, 30711 Mcfd, 37/64" Choke
Les, the 37/64 test on the Kardel #1 well is certainly a more open choke than any other well in the play (Texas or Louisiana) flowed at that I am familiar with. : Also , there is a pretty good distance from the Kardell well to the two wells (Encana's and EOG's) near the Nacogdoches/San Augustine border. Two questions I have for you, Les:

1) What was the initial flowing pressure of the Kardell well while it was making that 30,711mcf/day IP ???

2) What choke did Devon produce the well on after the initial test???

The rate of the Kardell well may not have been out of line with other wells in the area, though I'm not sure what other wells close to the Kardell well you are referring to, but the method Devon employed to get that IP rate was certainly out of line with what other Operators use to get their IP's. A 26/64....maybe a very occasional 28/64 (Comstock) is the most open choke I recall any Operator using for an IP before and after the Kardell #1 IP test. Somebody was stretching to make a splash and it looks to me that either: A) the well got ruined in the process or B) the shale in the Kardell isn't as good as elsewhere.
SB, unfortuntely I only have the initial test information below but would assume Devon would not have opened the choke further until the rate and flowing pressure began to decline.

Looking at EnCana's map the Kardell well was on trend with the EnCana Black Stone well so the reason I felt the test rate was not completely out of line. I do agree the choke was opened more than other wells but because many of Devon's wells are "Adj" it is unknown if this was out of line with their previous wells. The well's flowing pressure was still 6824 psi so Devon may have believed this was a reasonable choke size.

Because of limited information it is difficult to conclude Devon's reasons for the test procedure. There are many potential reasons for the well problems (frac design, frac execution, well test procedure, formation quality, surface equipment issues, etc) and Devon has not disclosed their assessment. Devon is a very experienced operator having drilled thousands of shale gas wells and traditionally have been conservative compared to others and not attempted to grab headlines. It is very possible they were just caught out by this well and will have to chalk it up to a learning experience.

Devon, Kardell GU #1H Well, Serial #682268 , San Augustine  County, 30711 Mcfd, 37/64" Choke, 6824 psi flowing pressure
Les, there is a wide swath of Shelby Co. which would appear to be "on trend' also but I can't find a single well in Shelby which would make the Hall of Fame list if you hadn't reduced it to 10,000mcf/day for Texas. It is kind of amazing that as experienced as Devon supposedly is in Shale plays, there is only one Devon well out of the 100+ on the Hall of fame list, namely the Kardell #1 and Devon apparently ruined it. What does that say other than they may know Barnett, but they appear to have some work to do in the Haynesville? Most of Devon's Haynesville wells appear to be in the 4-7 million/day range. Maybe they're spending time drilling too far north in Shelby, but either their rock isn't as good or their fracs aren't IMHO.
The 37/64 choke may not be out of line with Devon's previous wells, but I can't find a single Devon well before or after the Kardell that would make 10 million/day, much less 30. Lastly, Devon's 6800 psi to make the 30 million/day number is about 3000 psi short of EOG's and Encana's wells to make the same 30+ million/day. Maybe I'm missing something, but Devon doesn't appear to be having a huge amount of success in the Haynesville so far.
SB---agree with you on Devon and haynesville shale what your opinion on my discussion with Les B about headline on IP of wells for "wall Street"?
