I AIN’T DISS’N THE SUPERSTITION

Our family has Ham, Black-eyed peas and Cabbage every New Year’s Day.

The Ham is said to bring Health, Cabbage brings Money and Black-eyed peas brings Good Luck.

I’ve had this meal every year of my life and was quite surprised when a friend told me their tradition is different.

So now I’m wondering ……………….. What is your New Year Tradition?

And if you have a some good food ideas that will get me a good well, I’m open to that too.

HAPPY NEW YEAR’S !!!

Your menu and mine are the same. I never knew there was any other way.

And a HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR TO YOU AND YOURS

In Alabama, we have Pork, usually Babyback Ribs, Collard or Turnip Greens w/ Ham Hocks, blackeyed peas and rice.  I don't know what the rice is for, but I cook this every New Year's day.  I also add potato salad and cornbread.  Happy New Year!!!

We have the same thing plus cornbread and turnip greens with lots of pepper sauce.

Ohhh, all this sounds so mouth watering.  Makes me think of the phrase used for that seasoning product in the stores ... "Make yo' wanna slap yo' momma."

Bobi,

Someone had better tell me what's changed!?  You and I believe in the same tradition.

I don't know of anything that has changed keb.

Gosh, thanks for the interesting facts.

The thing about traditions is that iit doesnt really matter if they are silly.  They remind you of the TRUTH of things that are important like family.  Even when my family wasn't living close by,  New Years Day was a time to check in and reminise about those shared  traditional foods.  It's not so much that I believe in the superstition as I completely believe in tradition.  The superstition is just a sneaky was to sell it to the next generation.

This is the first year I contemplated it.  I've just Lways done it.  Somehow it seemed even more special thinking about doing it as an honored tradition.

Any good excuse to have good food with family works for me.

I hope it was a special day for everyone, and I hope that 2011 is a spectacular year.
