KTBS, Channel 3, Shreveport will air a special report on the Terryville Complex Sunday on their 10 O'clock newscast. For those who do not have access to the KTBS broadcast, I'll post a link to the feature story on the station's website when it becomes available.
Times are tough in the oil and gas patch these days.
Oversupply means low prices. That's good for consumers but bad for the energy business. Drilling has been cut back and thousands of people in Louisiana are out of work.
But head east on Interstate 20 and things are humming. It's an area called Terryville -- a rich energy field centered that stretches across parts of Lincoln Parish, Bienville Parish and Jackson Parish -- with more than just natural gas.
There's something buzzing about 70 miles down the road from Shreveport.
It's the sound of new energy and new money.
"The entire oil and gas industry knows what's going on in Lincoln Parish," said Skip Peel, a Shreveport-based independent landman.
It's the Terryville Energy Field, where drillers are finding staggering amounts of natural gas.
Peel continues to make a living in the field, despite the local downturn.
"These wells are monsters. They compare to any of the best wells in the entire United States," he said.
Terryville Complex -- part of the Cotton Valley Formation -- was long overshadowed by nearby Haynesville Shale, despite the economics.
In 2011 and 2012, Haynesville waned when the market tanked. It was a familiar taste to those who remember the downturn in the 1980s.
"Everything that was tied to the oil and gas business. And so when it went to south everything went with it so it was a really tough time for a lot of folks," said Peel.
But some drillers never gave up on Terryville. The recent uptick is the result of a horizontal drilling technique that's helped wells produce more natural gas, even compared to Haynesville.

Skip: Do you have a link for the story? Thanks.
Trisha, the producer who worked with me and the reporter, Alanna Quillen, on the story will let me know when a link is available. She was working on getting that done when she emailed me this morning.
Thanks!
Trisha, I've added a link to the video report as part of the discussion introduction. I'll post it here also.

Thank you very much!
You're welcome, Trisha.
Her name is Mrs. McCullin. And she has an MRD well with her name on it. We should all be so lucky.
Looking good Skip, way to go.
I didn't go in expecting to be on the video. I guess the make up artist was out. LOL!
How large an area could this type of technology expand to, Skip? IOW, could it be used in the Haynesville or older CV wells? Other LA formations?
BTW, it is good to be able to put face to your name. :)
David, the technology isn't that different from that used by Haynesville Shale operators. Here are the important elements IMO regarding the Terryville Complex. The productive formations are over pressured Cotton Valley Sands. There are 4 primary sands that are targeted. Because the Cotton Valley sands represent conventional reservoirs, they do not cover nearly the area covered by the Haynesville and Bossier Shales. In addition to really impressive volumes of natural gas the Terryville wells produce good liquid volumes which make them more profitable than wells producing dry gas. How large an area? That's unknown at this time. Hopefully Range Resources will move to better define the prospective extent of the play once they have completed their acquisition.
When the Haynesville Shale story came out in 2008, we at Globe Map Archives were inundated with requests for ownership maps. We have all parishes in north Louisiana, many in southeast Arkansas, east Texas, all of Mississippi, and part of Alabama. Please inform our readers that copies of these maps are still available which should include Terryville. You can contact our office at 424.6369 or me on cell phone at 318.393.9064.
Thank you

Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…

AboutAs exciting as this is, we know that we have a responsibility to do this thing correctly. After all, we want the farm to remain a place where the family can gather for another 80 years and beyond. This site was born out of these desires. Before we started this site, googling "shale' brought up little information. Certainly nothing that was useful as we negotiated a lease. Read More |
