Simple question on choke.
Do companies manage this manually or remotely via an automated system?

It is my understanding that the choke can be controlled remotely.

Many of the older wells and a lot of the newer wells I see cannot be "choked" remotely. Many of these can be shut in remotely

dbob, from what I have read in the past it takes a lot more than a remote controlled choke to make this deal work.
Question: How long before the choke wears out from flow?
Certain types of chokes on producing wells "can" be controlled remotely, but 99.99% of the ones used on shore are not. Most are manual and are changed by a person. Reason being, remote adjustable chokes are very expensive compared to the manual ones and there's not much cost effectiveness to being able to remotely change the choke size of a well.
Chokes cans wear out from flow, but assuming there is no sand in the gas stream, that is it is just gas flowing, they last years. Even if it does "wear out" that effective just means the opening gets bigger and bigger and flow continues.
Thanks Darrell
I have a choke on my desk that was taken from a well about 15 years ago. It is stainless steel, about six inches long, 1.5 inches in diameter and has 16/64 stamped on it. It has a threaded section and a hex head. The 16/64th hole thru the center is lined with some other type of material, not sure what, maybe ceramic. There is nothing adjustable about this choke.
Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…

AboutAs exciting as this is, we know that we have a responsibility to do this thing correctly. After all, we want the farm to remain a place where the family can gather for another 80 years and beyond. This site was born out of these desires. Before we started this site, googling "shale' brought up little information. Certainly nothing that was useful as we negotiated a lease. Read More |
