THE GHS HAYNESVILLE SHALE RIG TRACKER. 2023
I'll update each week so we can follow the rig count. I am only counting rigs drilling the Haynesville and Bossier formations. Many industry rig numbers are for the "Haynesville Area", however they may defined that, and includes wells drilling other formations.

Hi Skip - we must have a different data source for active rigs just drilling Haynesville or Mid-Bossier targets. My data source that is updated every day has the the current number at 38 in LA and 22 in TX for a total of 60. The most active Parishes/Counties are DeSoto with 12, Caddo with 9, Red River with 8, and Panola, TX with 8.
Hi, Ryan. I build my list each week from the Enverus, formerly RigData, Weekly rig report. A number of such reports are inaccurate because they treat Haynesville as an area as opposed to an actual count of rigs drilling Haynesville/Bossier wells. There are horizontal wells in NW and LA that are not Haynesville/Bossier but Cotton Valley. There are companies in E TX with contract rigs that will drill a Haynesille or Bossier well and then a Cotton Valley. Here in NW LA we have Empresa that strictly drills horizontal Cotton Valley wells. Since the Enverus weekly rig report is informed by driller reports, I have found it to be the most accurate source.
Interesting - I use Enverus Prism which is the platform that Enverus is transitioning all of their legacy Drilling Info data to.

Yes, Haynesville Shale directed rigs finally surpassed the 70 monthly total for 2022.
Stupid question - no Bossier wells associated with these rigs?
On GHS, there is no such thing as a stupid question. The rig report designates E TX rigs that are drilling Haynesville and Bossier as the Carthage Field. The TRRC database does clearly label wells as Haynesville or Bossier but in LA the drilling units have depth definitions that include both the HA and the BO. All BO wells have the HA designation. Where there are BO wells, there will be HA wells so you can compare TVDs to tell them apart. The only instance where a LA operator might label a well as BO would be in their alternate unit well applications owing to the mandatory minimum spacing between well laterals. I could take the time to look up each well to try and break out HA from BO but Keith doesn't pay me enough. LOL! Which reminds me, it is that time of year when he usually asks for members to consider making a donation. Here's how to do it.
Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…

AboutAs exciting as this is, we know that we have a responsibility to do this thing correctly. After all, we want the farm to remain a place where the family can gather for another 80 years and beyond. This site was born out of these desires. Before we started this site, googling "shale' brought up little information. Certainly nothing that was useful as we negotiated a lease. Read More |
