It seems that EnCana is only major player in Haynesville that is not drilling the Cotton Valley or Haynesville. EXCO has flipped or contracted their Cotton Valley CULs to Indigo, BHP to Sklar, Chesapeake to Indigo, EnCana to no one. Can anyone shed any light on this.

It appears that Anadarko has mostly given up on their North Caddo play and have acquired Haynesville interests from J W Operating around Lake Bistineau in Bossier.  They should be drilling there shortly.

I totally understand, Bobi.  Although there is certainly the possibility of some exceptions I think 99% of the leasehold acquired in the Haynesville Shale from 2007 forward by both companies fell under their 50/50 JV agreement.  In your area and just across the river in Caddo it was predominantly CHK and HK slugging it out for leasehold early in the emerging play.  ECA and SWEPI were happy to be further south and more under the radar.  Unfortunately for them that didn't last long as CHK abandoned the vast majority of their leases north of I-20 and jumped into DeSoto in 2009/2010.

I expect that XTO would be happy to have Encana's 50% for the right price.

XTO, doesn't play well with others.

We were leased about a year before the hey day.  The landman later told me that this area was the first they were sent to lease.  I've never checked to see if that was just fluff for discussion, but ECA did have a pretty big chunk of this area leased.  Most of their leases later went to HK and Chesapeake got a pretty good bit as well.

If nothing else, it is always interesting to follow the developments.

CHK and HK were well into CV development in south Bossier, south Caddo and north DeSoto before the beginning of leasing for the Haynesville Shale.  It's quite possible that ECA took leases in those CV areas that ended up being Working Interest in units operated by CHK and HK.  It's highly likely that those leases were forced pooled or voluntary WI subject to the ECA/SWEPI JV.  Numerous crews of landmen were assigned to different areas.  One landman would have no idea what was going on outside of their area..  Each crew was in overdrive rushing to lease their area.

Bobi, are you in Desoto or Bossier?

I'm in Bossier
