I have a question for Aubrey Sanders. My parents have land in Logan County which is also HBP be it ever so minimal. CHK is now in the process of buying up mineral rights in that county and I am left to try to figure out how to end the existing lease. Can you direct me as to how I might go about this. I have contacted an Ozark lawyer, but that didn't help much. Thanks for any input you or anyone else has to offer.

MAGNOLIA, Ark. (AP) _ Energy production experts say there is little chance that southern Arkansas will enjoy a boom from the Haynesville Shale similar to the drilling rush in the central part of the state, where companies are tapping the Fayetteville Shale.

The Haynesville Shale, centered in northwest Louisiana, is estimated to hold 29 to 39 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, though the range of the formation is not fully known. The Fayetteville Shale formation holds an estimated 20 trillion cubic feet.

One problem with the portion of the Haynesville formation that may extend into Arkansas is that it may have thinned out there and also be mostly sand, making drilling untenable, said Ed Ratchford, senior petroleum geologist and supervisor for the Arkansas Geological Survey.

Ratchford said four well inspections indicated the area does not appear to hold promise, though the Arkansas portion has not been fully evaluated. The boundary of the formation is still being defined.

"It appears that it is shifting more from shale to sand as it comes up into Arkansas," Ratchford told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. It's also thinner. "Those two are sort of negatives as far as being able to produce gas."

The Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission said Wednesday that no permits for natural gas drilling in the Haynesville Shale have been issued in the state.

Louisiana-based oil and gas consultant Bill Pittman said he found no indication that the Haynesville Shale would produce gas in Arkansas. He noted the change in the geology in southern Arkansas and wrote in an e-mail to the newspaper: "That does not mean it won't be productive, as only much drilling will define this play."

Burt Williams, president and chief executive officer of drilling company Bonanza Creek, said Louisiana will be the focus for drilling.

"If we had shale (in south Arkansas) we'd be going for it and producing it, but we just don't see any evidence of it," Williams told the paper.

Likewise, Chesapeake Energy Corp. senior vice president of corporate development Tom Price said the company was open to drilling anywhere natural gas can be tapped. "However, we are not currently leasing for Haynesville Shale in Arkansas at this time."

Ratchford said it was common for speculative leasing to occur in areas that could be active, but local government leaders in southwest Arkansas say they have seen little or no such activity.

I will be checking on Marathon location next week and will report anything I learn. Actually that well is not very far from Haynesville sand production along Ark./La. line, but I know Marathon will slao be evaluating H. shale as they drill. XTO will be drilling Smackover well about 3 miles west right away in Sec. 2, T23n, r9w. about 2 years ago we drilled Haynesville sand well in S12, T23N, R9w. Forest Oil has acquired that well. They are shale specialists. Keep our fingers crossed. I did not sell my WI to Forest so I am very anxious.

In the Arkansas Democrat Gazette this morning, Marathon is permitted for a well to 11,000 feet in the Haynesville formation. It will be interesting. This is in Columbia County Arkansas.

Acadiana,

Aren't you the same one on the Tiger Droppings thread that said you got $10,000 an acre for your land in the river bottoms of Plain Dealing???

Acadiana,
What river bottoms? How far from Bradley? The river bottoms I know has a pipeline running through it behind my parents land. I haven't been contacted but am making a phone call tomorrow, to someone I already do business with, to give them info on my land.
This land was leased before, during last boom. They have drilled a little over the years..I need to check DNR on that right now.

Is Miller County Arkansas being associated with the Haynesville Shale?
Comment by Mark on July 25, 2008 at 11:19
I know that there have been severals leases in Lafayette county. These were not just in the southern part of the county. In fact one of them was north of Buckner. They were paid over $500.00 per acre but I don't know that royalties. mark
