Actually, it's probably the third... there was the R. Dean Hay (SL) #2H at Joaquin (just drilled) and Friday (24th) XTO permitted the Fightin' Irish (SL) #2H in San Augustine County. So... this is the 3rd one that I know of.

Forgive my ignorance, what is the advantage of the "stacked lateral". it seems like you would just want to drill in a second well.

dbob--it basically is 2nd well--the R Dean Hays(SL) #1 and # 2 wells drilled by Goodrich just east of Joaquin---they drilled a H Haynesville Shale well then moved rig over on same pad and then drilled a H Bossier shale well. they are both shale but in different formations of the shale--they have completed drilling but not frac the wells to date. The SL will test both formation of Haynesville and Bossier

They are separate wells. The new field rules allow them to be MUCH closer to one another, maximizing the ultimate recovery (gas produced) from the well. There can be no more than 250 ft between surface locations (no minimum) and no more than 300 ft between laterals. The previous rules kept the distances at least 330 ft apart.

Thanks all,

I'm really getting an education here. So, essentially the drilling operations cost roughly the same for each well, but the stacked laterals don't require a new surface location, and don't require additional pipeline.

It saves some drilling cost, but I think it's more about maximizing production. If you could fit 8 wells in a unit under the old rules, now you can fit 16 (or more) in that same target zone (s) (Haynesville/Bossier). If gas would get back above $6.00 you'd see stacked laterals everywhere, IMHO.
