Frac Water Education Series: Sabine River Authority to address new regulations and water prices
On July 1st the Sabine River Authority of Louisiana implemented its first-ever regulations and pricing for water outside the Toledo Bend project. The changes target withdrawals of water from the streams and tributaries of the Sabine Watershed for hydraulic fracturing. According to Executive Director, James W. Pratt, the new regulatory regime will balance the needs for environmental protection and economic development from shale production.

In researching the decades-old Tuscaloosa Trend and the immense wealth it has generated for many, I find it deeply troubling that this resource-rich formation runs directly beneath one of the poorest communities in North Baton Rouge—near Southern University, Louisiana—yet neither the university ( that I am aware of) nor local residents appear to have received any compensation for the minerals extracted from their land.
This area has suffered immense environmental degradation…
