Elephant's child here, back from yet another trek to yet another Limpopo ...
Okay, I most certainly am not an expert in any of this, I just know that a certain country produces about 94% of the world's REE's. I've read some about the types of locations & formations where they can be found. I know that these are needed for a whole host of things, from night vision goggles to electrical components for cars to our dear gadgets to refining. I ran across this article, which piqued my interests even though it's like some ancient language to me, and, well, you can guess what happened next. "hmmmmmmmmm...."
Any chances, even slim, that REE's could be turning up as the shales are being drilled?

sesport II,
I went out last night with my "night vision" goggles, shovel, pick and ax, and started diggin in the old back yard. I was a little dizzy though (from reading your source material). However, I printed it out...just in case I found anything. LOL
If I find any REEs, I'm sure not tellin' CHK. LOL
Good question though. I have no clue. Ask Les B, or ShaleGeo. They are always in the know.
I AM LOL, that is hysterical. I needed a good laugh!
Thanks sesport II. Much appreciated!

While digging for moles, i think my labrador ate some rocks... could they be rare earth elements. i'll be searching my yard. Sorry, could't help it. I think if they found rare earth elements around here, there'd be protests... the EPA would swarm... "Occupy Haynesville" would show up and there would be all sorts of problems don't you think?
You too, JHH,
I am sure we three sesport II, you, and I could go on the Comedy Club Tour circuit and call ourselves "The GHS REE Trio" with plenty of "Occupy Haynesville" type shtick. Too funny!
"my labrador ate some rocks..." LOL
REE's are not all that rare but they are only found in areas that were geologically active at some point, i'm not a geologist but i'm fairly certain they must be brought into the upper crust by mantle eruptions. so no there are probably not significant deposits of REE's in NW La.
china hardly has the monopoly on available supply that one might infer from their dominance of the production of REE's, but it should be understood that they dominate this sector the same way they dominate things like making steel and solar panels. i'll let everyone guess as to the specifics of how this works.
Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…

AboutAs exciting as this is, we know that we have a responsibility to do this thing correctly. After all, we want the farm to remain a place where the family can gather for another 80 years and beyond. This site was born out of these desires. Before we started this site, googling "shale' brought up little information. Certainly nothing that was useful as we negotiated a lease. Read More |
