Haynesville Shale drilling showing new signs of life

It’s no secret the Haynesville Shale isn’t what it used to be — but it’s showing signs of coming back. Five years ago, other parts of the nation were envious of the activity in the Haynesville Shale, which stretches from Northeast Texas into Northwest Louisiana. Billed as the largest natural gas field in the U.S., it was the hottest energy property in the nation. At its peak in 2010, nearly 190 drilling rigs were operating. But all that changed as supply increased and the price of natural gas plummeted, pushing much of the drilling activity south to the Eagle Ford Shale, where drillers were able to extract more valuable crude oil and liquids from the ground. In recent months, though, the Haynesville has been drawing operators back into the game. Natural gas prices have been inching upward, so companies are returning rigs to the area — and have plans for more to come.

Is the Lower Cotton Valley beginning to pick up as well?

Since the Cotton Valley Sands are conventional reservoirs, as opposed to the Haynesville Shale which is unconventional, the answer to your question is location specific. The answer is different based on whether a locale has dry or wet Cotton Valley gas. In general where the CV is liquid-prone there was no slowing of development such as experienced with Haynesville drilling.  Wells producing liquids require specialized infrastructure.  As pipelines and treating facilities designed for wet gas are extended into new areas it is likely that more operators will drill wet gas wells.

Jay, for awhile there were lots of permits for lower CV in southwest Caddo by Indigo and all of a sudden it seems everything just stopped. What is going on?

I think most of the pipeline infrastructure to Duke is in as on my trips back and forth from Tx to La I always take the back roads off of Highway 79 to La and remember all the pipelines going in last spring & summer. On last month's trip I didn't see any pipeline construction.

Nat. Gas prices were hammered again today - down to $3.58 & Dec. futures all out - $3.84;  Difficult to understand why alternate unit wells are being drilled at these prices.  Well cost have not changed - hard to figure.
