I have an old stock certificate from James A Noe Oil company, dated back to the 1920's. Does anyone have any idea what happened to company and what he did with the holdings.

Not much you can do with dry holes. However the stock certificate might be worth something in Monroe as a historical document.

Win or Lose Corporation got an interest in most of the old state leases, which many of these are still producing. One such lease was the State Lease 340. This lease outline was from the coast line of Louisiana out to the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. The federal government change this out to federal waters.
It seems that James A Noe was a good ole boy or what today we call a corrupt politician.
In what is being called one of the biggest cases of fraud in U.S. history, a corporation started in 1934 by a former senator and Louisiana governor, Huey Long, has received hundreds of millions of dollars from a corrupt political deal struck in the 1930s.
After a name-change in 1941, the Win or Lose Corporation was dissolved in 1951, according to state secretary of state’s office, but the family members of the corporation’s founders continue to reap the benefits as the state of Louisiana has done nothing to change the contract that is still currently in place.
According to a Fox 8 WVUE New Orleans investigation, the corporation has made about $811 million off of one state oil lease that they have held for over 70 years.
The Win or Lose Corporation was founded by the then-Sen. Long and also owned by state Sen. James A. Noe, New Orleans hotel owner Seymour Weiss, and Earl Christenberry, Long’s secretary. According to WVUE, Long’s name never appeared on the paperwork, but records show he was a partner of the company....

Those who are not from Louisiana or who are not from the South, many times don't understand certain words and phrases. Good ole boys are not inherently corrupt or bad. In fact, there are many good ole boys on GHS. A lot of good ole boys are in law enforcement. Some even work for the FBI. Also, there have been so-called "reform" administrations in Louisiana which are not what they actually claim to be. Can only imagine how hard it is for first generation and second generation U.S. immigrants to figure out the subtextual nuances of the good ole boy culture in Louisiana.
The stock certificate is certainly suitable for framing and hanging in one's home or office. James A Noe actually served as governor of La. for a few months. I don't recall the circumstances (he was not elected governor), but perhaps during one of the stormy terms served Uncle Earl.
some of the leases that were granted to Win Lose Oil Company are still HBP. There was likely deceit in their original issuance, but it would likely be difficult for the State to file suit to cancel them based on fraud. Who would testify? And the laws in Louisiana back in those days may not have been strong enough to render the leases or the act of leasing illegal. Part of our "colorful history."
Thank you for the responses. I have done some research in the past on James Noe but it seems to stop in the early 30's I cant find anything in 20's. Just a bit curious if there may be some value in the stock.
Is there a transfer agent listed on the certificate? Also what state was it incorporated in? That state mostly likely has some info on corporation, the question is how much dust is it buried under. Most likely the stock became worthless during the 1929 stock market crash and the following depression.
Here is a picture of James Noe around 1920 standing in front of an Noe Oil and Gas Co. well.

That is one sweet oil well. The Workman No. 1 flowed at Smackover, "initially at an estimated 35,000 barrels a day." Who wouldn't want some of that? Wish my family was so lucky. The El Dorado of fabulous riches.
Noe (1890-1976) was able to wrestle broadcast licenses from the federal government, hence WNOE radio in New Orleans and KNOE radio and KNOE-TV in Monroe. My father got into a fist fight with Noe during the '50s, which was front page news at the time.
Noe had been appointed lieutenant governor in 1934 when John Fournet retired from that post in order to take a seat on the state Supreme Court. Governor O. K. Allen died in January of 1936 and thus Noe served as governor until May of 1936. All of these people were principals in the Long machine.
Shale drilling and lithium extraction are seemingly distinct activities, but there is a growing connection between the two as the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions. While shale drilling primarily targets…

AboutAs exciting as this is, we know that we have a responsibility to do this thing correctly. After all, we want the farm to remain a place where the family can gather for another 80 years and beyond. This site was born out of these desires. Before we started this site, googling "shale' brought up little information. Certainly nothing that was useful as we negotiated a lease. Read More |
