If it was my company, I would be getting whole core and every high-end open hole log I could get - including oriented dipole logs for geomechanical and stress info.

Take one's time in evaluating the core for TOC, maturity, mineralogy, P&P, Gas in place, etc.

And come up with best landing / target zone for lateral

Thanks.  I'll keep looking for additional wells in the Robeline Field that may provide an idea of what Expand and GEPH II are looking at to inform their leasing efforts.

I am trying to make my final decision on lease in Nach.parrish   One from GEP ll and it he is company authorized by Expand.

Terms are good from both   Does it really matter which one?

Carol, yes it does matter. One side of my family has been signing O&G leases for over a hundred years in Bossier Parish. The other side of my family has had land in Natchitoches Parish. Different type of leasing. If it was me, if you have good terms, I'd sign with the actual driller/operator if you can. With this stuff, I've found that the big companies are much better to deal with than the small operators. You want reliable monthly royalty payments. You don't want excuses when it comes to mailbox money. But if you're dealing with two different land companies that are actually working for the same driller/operator -- then go with the landman who you like for his/her honesty and helpful attitude. Trust your gut. Good luck.

Thanks for your input the upfront bonus $ is good and no one Knows if they do drill are u in the area to get paid ?? Or which one willl drill GEP ll or Expand   I do have a lot of time invested with co /working for Expand but if I knew of a great reason to go with GEP ll I would highly consider that for our present and future.   I was lucky and my relative is a land lawyer so he looked over lease (free) and made some changes.   Grateful to have this luck on a lease. Will see what decide soon as I am about brain dead dealing with all but I have learned a lot

Carol, it sounds like you're doing your due diligence. Take your time. The wise take their time. Don't let anyone "buffalo" you. Rushing isn't needed. The oil patch tends to plod along at a snail's pace. I remember years back when Chesapeake was leasing in Natch. Parish, using a land company out of Baton Rouge. Mark O'Neal. I handled the negotiation for my family. I wanted to avoid signing with Chesapeake per that company's bad reputation. And the terms weren't what I wanted. But then CHK pulled the plug. Stopped leasing. Years later, Aethon comes along. I had leases in Bossier Parish that Aethon had bought from some other operators, tracing back the "play" to JW Operating. I liked dealing with JW. Sadly, most of my family had sold their land in Natch. Parish by the time Aethon did their step-out for six wells (I think it was) in my family's section. Luckily, there was one family member who'd held out. That said, if I had the choice between CHK and Aethon . . . I'd go with Aethon since CHK has such a terrible reputation with royalty owners. Aubrey M. was a heck of a cowboy who played fast and loose with people's land. Me, I like honesty and steady income. Skip will be able to help you more than I can. He knows his stuff. You can trust Skip. He'll give you good/honest advice. He's helped hundreds of people. Great guy, that Skip. He might be off fishing. I advise waiting until you hear from Skip. Good luck.

Hi Carol. I agree with Jesse that it can matter who you lease with, and it can be preferable to be leased to the operator that will be developing your minerals if possible. Both GEP and Expand are established operators in the basin. I don't know where your minerals are located, but as of last month, GEP has recorded leases for 10,246 acres in the 9N-9W and 8N-9W area. I haven't checked the Natchitoches Parish courthouse for a few weeks, but I didn't see any leases recorded for Expand in this area. However, they are obviously leasing. Good luck!

This is the reply I received from my contact at the Office of Conservation.

This is an odd one. They are actually drilling a directional well. Not sure what's causing the surface location to be so far away from the bottom hole location but this will not be a horizontally produced well. Odd things happen in this part of the world so I'm not completely surprised by something odd like this.

Looking closer at this - something is weird.

The TVD of 17,000' paired with a measured depth of 26,000' MD would normally be indicative of a planned Hz well.

• But if it is truly a directional well, this would mean a directional offset of over 19,000' (if my geometry calculations are correct)

I looked at the surface view of this area (Sec 27-9N-9W) - nothing by woods and some open fields. No culture.

• Why would one have to drill a 3+ mile directional well to test a specific target at 17,000' TVD?

If this is a specific bottom hole target at this depth, I would have to figure it was some sort of a deep Jurassic structural feature - perhaps a reef.

• But the TVD vs MD doesn't make sense for this.

Something is missing or in error in the permit info we have - need to see the actual permit plat to see what the plan is really here.

It will be a few days before the full permit is available on SONRIS.  Maybe even next week as slow as things have been in Baton Rouge.  If it is not available by Thursday, I'll see if I can get a copy from the local office.
