The Myth of the Heron and the Hummingbird.

Heron and the Hummingbird

(Hitchiti Tribe)

retold by

S. E. Schlosser

Heron and Hummingbird were very good friends, even though one was tall and gangly and awkward and one was small and sleek and fast. They both loved to eat fish. The Hummingbird preferred small fish like minnows and Heron liked the large ones.

One day, Hummingbird said to his friend: "I am not sure there are enough fish in the world for both of our kind to eat. Why don't we have a race to see which of… Continue

Chatting with T. Boone Pickens at the EnergyBiz Leadership Forum

Shalers,

The EnergyBiz Leadrship Forum was put together well. The focus of the conference tackled the effects of the Obama stimulus package on the power industry, as well as the short- and long-term consequences of the energy and economic crises. As I mentioned in a previous post, I was a little disappointed that CNG was not directly tackled in depth. It seemed that every other energy aspect was covered except CNG. This absence is probably explained when one looks at the current… Continue

I am UMI

I am an unleased mineral interest owner. I can't help but notice the derisive comments slung my way and towards others like me. Seems industry types hurl slurs at us, particularly when business is slow, i.e., when natural gas prices tumble a bit. Yeah, no one likes them; at least, not those of us who stand to profit immensely from higher prices. In any event, back to the point. Exemplary of the childish name-calling include "parasites, goats, and freeloaders." Hmmm. Bullying is distasteful not… Continue

Disagreeing and Disagreeable

Disagreeing and Disagreeable

I’ll be the first to admit that I have been in the middle of more than my fair share of GHS disagreements. Some of these disagreements are actually enjoyable to be involved in. Sharing ideas, hashing out opinions and trying to see the other side of the coin. I believe it is one of the best parts of the site. Disagreeing respectfully.

All of the disagreements haven’t been pretty. It is sometimes hard to be polite when you so vehemently disagree… Continue

This is a warning to all who will heed.

I guess I need to start out by saying, “I did not want to do this”. I can’t type and do not even like to write that much, but I hate liars and cheats even more. I was raised and taught that a man is only as good as his word. When two people came to an agreement and gave their word on a deal, then they were bound by honor to see it through to the end. That is one of the reasons I am doing all of this. Secondly; it is also a warning to all who will read this that J.W. Porter & associates L.… Continue

More Economic Stimulus - The Devil is in the Details

Or in several cases I should say the Angel. These are some sweet credits we are all paying to get. I'll take last weeks list and expand on what we know so far.

1. Nothing that I have been able to locate yet that will directly impact HS money, like tax breaks for that type of income.

Still nothing new here.

2. People on unemployment will receive an extra $25 a week, a longer time to draw benefits, and the first $2400 will be tax exempt on their federal… Continue

Officials Suggest Gas Drilling Technique is Safe, Then Acknowledge Lack of Evidence

NY State Admits Ignoring Threat to City’s Drinking Water

Well Duh! Like I said: If hydraulic fracturing is so damn safe, why does Big Oil need exemptions?

In two documents released last October and earlier this month, the Department of Environmental Conservation declared that it “does not…find a significant environmental impact…

2009 Economic Stimulus Package and Your Taxes

Here is an overview of what the new Economic Stimulus package is going to mean to your taxes. Please remember that there are a lot of specifics that haven't been announced yet, so these are mostly generalizations.

1. Nothing that I have been able to locate yet that will directly impact HS money, like tax breaks for that type of income.

2. People on unemployment will receive an extra $25 a week, a longer time to draw benefits, and the first $2400 will be tax exempt on their federal… Continue

State of the Industry, As Seen at NAPE (From an Observer's Perspective)

Many of you have looked to various indicators and bellwethers as to the general health of the industry as a whole, and in particular, how same will apply to the Haynesville Shale for the coming year. From those of us "in the business", many of us look to the turnout, prospects, and outlook gleaned at NAPE (formerly the North American Prospect Expo) as a significant bellwether as to the general state of the business in the coming year.

A little background:

NAPE began in… Continue

Our Discussion on Natural Gas with Tom Fowler (Business/Energy Reporter, Houston Chronicle)

Here is the trascript of our discussion with Tom Fowler. Again, I want to thank Tom and I want to thank you for participating and asking some good questions. The discussion was great and I am eager to have more of these.

I FELL IN LOVE ON-LINE!

I DON’T KNOW HOW IT HAPPENED BUT I FELL IN LOVE ON-LINE.

I’ve never been to a social network site before so it has been an odd experience for me. I came to GHS for information. I googled Haynesville Shale and this was one of the things that came up. I read it and everything else I could find. I was and am completely fascinated. I just can’t learn enough.

I came to the sight with some background knowledge. I’ve leased before and thought when I leased this time it was… Continue

Dorcheated's Guide For Shale Terminology

Just recently my newest buddy, or the master of this sight Haynesville, asked if I would be interested in writing a blog. Haynesville never forgetting any of the small details reminded me of the fact that my farther (who was journalist and cartoonist) may have passed this gene on to me. Of course people on this site have come to terms with the fact that this did not happen. It's not because my farther didn't try, he did. Dad would always gently pop me on the back of the head, ok, ok, he would… Continue

ANALYSIS OF HAYNESVILLE SHALE E&P COMPANIES BY NET ACREAGE POSITIONS AS OF SEPTEMBER, 2008

THE FOLLOWING RANKING AND NET ACREAGE POSITIONS ARE TAKEN FROM PUBLIC INFORMATION AVAILABLE ONLINE. THEY DO NOT REPRESENT CURRENT TOTALS AS MANY OF THE REPORTS ARE SEVERAL MONTHS OLD. ACREAGE POSITIONS HAVE BEEN ROUNDED UP TO THE NEAREST 1,000. THE LIST IS NOT PRESENTED AS A COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS AS I WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE TOTALS FOR SOME OPERATING COMPANIES. OF SIGNIFICANT NOTE, I HAVE FOUND NO ACREAGE TOTAL FOR SHELL WESTERN E&P, INC. (SWEPI). IT IS UNCLEAR IF SWEPI'S ACRES ARE INCLUDED… Continue

Do you "Really" know the LEGAL STATUS of your minerals? Now is the time to "Do Your Mineral Homework"...

For those of us who have not leased anything yet, now is the time to be doing your land/mineral research in preparation for the next round of leasing (2009). When you get an offer, you should already know all you can about your interests. You should know the history of the land/minerals and how you came to own your interests. You should know who else may own a % of the minerals you think you own, whether you acquired that interest through inheritance or purchase. Don't wait for the land company… Continue

CHRONOLOGY OF THE EARLY HAYNESVILLE SHALE PLAY IN NW. LOUISIANA

The first Haynesville Shale well in the state of Louisiana was permitted January 12, 2006 by Encana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc. as a product type “00” (No Product Specified) with a permitted horizon listed as Smackover.  It was drilled in Section 15 – Township 13N – Range 9W of Red River Parish in the Martin Field.  The ADCOCK INV LP ETAL was assigned serial #232697 (API Number 17081208570000).  It spudded February 27, 2006 and drilled to a depth of 12,878’.  On…

Haynesville Shale Basics for the Newbies out there

Since this site has gotten so big and there are so many newbies on here, I thought I would do a little basics outline for folks this time. Let me prefice this by saying that leasing has slowed to a crawl at this point and Chesapeake is backing out of many deals in areas they do not hold the majority. That said, I do think the market will stabalize and the leasing activity will ebb and flow for the next several years so information about drilling and leasing is still relevant. I hope this helps… Continue

BUILDING A MINERAL ESTATE FILE

Every mineral owner should assemble, and keep current, a file of pertinent information regarding their mineral estate. The file should contain conveyance documents of numerous types, royalty payment receipts, lessee contact information and well data (if the minerals are under an existing lease) and notes that help to describe the extent and status of the mineral estate. The discussions on Go Haynesville Shale provide a daily reminder of why all mineral owners should know as much as possible… Continue

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Sign The Letter Of Intent

A funny thing happened on the way to sign the letter of intent..NOT!

I have been working since May for my area. I went door to door and talked to folks in my section about mineral rights and the need to collectively bargain. I had meetings in my living room then moved them to my yard when there were too many to fit into the house. Soon people from outside my section were joining our group and we had representatives from 8 sections.

I have been negotiating with the O&G… Continue
