A fish fry fundraiser for 12-year-old Odie Harris will take place Saturday at the Four Way Country Store in Haughton.

Harris, a student at Curtis Elementary, was diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer earlier this month.

Gaye Myers, a close friend of the Harris family, says that the cancer has completely compromised his liver and has spread to his lungs.

The fundraiser will begin at 3 p.m. and will have a dunk tank, a raffle for various items and a fishplate meal.… Continue

Shale Togetherness: Couple Employed as Drill Site "Guardians"

I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to Lynn and John Irving on several occasions. They are the gate guards on a well that I’ve visited. They are a fascinating couple that are from New Zealand and now working part of the year in the states for Gate Guard Services to provide support for gas well locations.

Bobi: How did you get into this line of…

FARM DUTY

FARM DUTY

Geez, this winter sure has been tough. First the flood. Hadn’t seen anything like it in almost twenty years. Not as bad this time but it sure had me worried. Last time I couldn’t get to the cows for almost a week. It broke my heart to find the few that didn’t make it. They are so dependent this time of year. No matter how much you try to tell yourself you…

Pre Conference Notice (What the heck does it say and what the heck does it mean).

Pre Conference Notice (What the heck does it say and what the heck does it mean).

I’m going to try to lay out what the things on a pre conference notice mean in simple terms to a layman (from a layman). If I get it wrong, please correct me. If it is a nuance difference that is only useful to those of us that love to pick apart every lease clause and obsess over everything oil and gas, please be kind and post it somewhere else. Let's keep it simple. I hope that this blog and comments… Continue

Jane Austen's guide to leasing

To get a PROPER lease you need to think like a woman a few hundred years ago. You'll have to wait until they come to you and then you can't appear to be interested. Actually something short of total disdain is called for maybe even the honest threat that you will go UMO. You will still need to flutter your fan though. That way when you get asked to the ball, you know that they will actually dance with you when you get there. They won’t have your intent and then not follow through with their… Continue

Cottonwood Fluff?

Cottonwood fluff blowing in the wind..

It makes me think of Dandelion wish flowers. A child closing their eyes tightly making their wish as they blow the fluff into the air. An innocent desire released into the universe. A hope from the heart let loose to the world. When I see cottonwood fluff it reminds me of this dandelion ritual. Sometimes when we grow into adults we forget that we can still hope. We can still dream and experience the joys that our hearts knew as children.… Continue

The Myth of the Heron and the Hummingbird.

Heron and the Hummingbird

(Hitchiti Tribe)

retold by

S. E. Schlosser

Heron and Hummingbird were very good friends, even though one was tall and gangly and awkward and one was small and sleek and fast. They both loved to eat fish. The Hummingbird preferred small fish like minnows and Heron liked the large ones.

One day, Hummingbird said to his friend: "I am not sure there are enough fish in the world for both of our kind to eat. Why don't we have a race to see which of… Continue

SHOULD I MARRY MY LANDMAN?

DO YOU TRUST YOUR LANDMAN ENOUGH TO MARRY HIM/HER?

A mineral lease has a longer life than most marriages. Since this document may be longer lasting than a marriage, why would you enter into it lightly?

Some may look at it with the dreaming eyed impetuous hopes or the same mindset as a teenager who would get married in a Las Vegas drive through Chapel. I’ve heard people say “it’s all free money, so why does it even matter?”. Nothing in life is free, so a little… Continue

Disagreeing and Disagreeable

Disagreeing and Disagreeable

I’ll be the first to admit that I have been in the middle of more than my fair share of GHS disagreements. Some of these disagreements are actually enjoyable to be involved in. Sharing ideas, hashing out opinions and trying to see the other side of the coin. I believe it is one of the best parts of the site. Disagreeing respectfully.

All of the disagreements haven’t been pretty. It is sometimes hard to be polite when you so vehemently disagree… Continue

Perspective

Perspective

Some times things aren’t good or bad they just may be distasteful from your perspective.

If I sell a piece of property and reserve minerals, I want the gas companies to drill NOW before I lose my interests. The buyer of the property hopes they don’t drill soon enough and the mineral rights will become theirs. In it’s basic form that sounds simple enough.

But what if I sell someone 300 acres of prime development property that is held by… Continue

LOCAL ECONOMIC STIMULUS PACKAGE

REFINANCING BARGAINS.

Some people complain about what is, or may be, done for homeowners in trouble. While worrying about someone else getting "theirs" unfairly, don't forget to look at what you can get yourself. If you qualify under good old fashion lending practices, you should be able to get rates @ around 5.0% for a 30 year loan. Like a lot of things rates are very volatile right now, so if this is something worthwhile for your circumstances don’t put it off.

If you… Continue

Black history month, “what’s that have to do with me?”

I never paid a lot of attention to black history month and have even fallen pray to the “why isn’t there a white history month” mentality.

I’m not old enough to have lived the atrocities that existed in the past. I have to admit that even though I felt sympathy at the types of things that I read about, I didn’t really “feel the pain” in a gut wrenching manner. It was something that I understood was horrendous but it was mostly all before my time. It was inexcusable but it didn’t… Continue

AMERICAN RIGHT OF WAY ASSOCIATES, INC. - CLASS REVIEW.

When there is a downturn in the job market, experts advise get more education and to get out and network with people in your industry. An AMERICAN RIGHT OF WAY ASSOCIATES, INC. (ARA) class allows you to do both. They also have a heaping dose of Lagniappe to add, but I’ll get to that a little later.

I attended the AWA Right of Way (ROW) class held January 24, 2009 at the Petroleum Club in Shreveport. I’ve attended many educational seminars for Real Estate, Title and Mortgage. I have… Continue

I FELL IN LOVE ON-LINE!

I DON’T KNOW HOW IT HAPPENED BUT I FELL IN LOVE ON-LINE.

I’ve never been to a social network site before so it has been an odd experience for me. I came to GHS for information. I googled Haynesville Shale and this was one of the things that came up. I read it and everything else I could find. I was and am completely fascinated. I just can’t learn enough.

I came to the sight with some background knowledge. I’ve leased before and thought when I leased this time it was… Continue
