Yes, that Continental Resources.  Partial sections 17-20, 3N - 11W.  Just east of the South Toledo Bend State Park, Toro Road area.

Suggest that members do a little Google search for Continental Resources.  Hint: Big Bakken oil field player.

If anyone has a way to contact Kirk Barrell, they should let him know so he can post his thoughts on this new AC player.  Continental is a large publicly traded company that has never focused on the Chalk or even Louisiana so this is very interesting.

I agree that it would be good to hear Kirk's opinion but don't you think he already knows about this application?  If not, he must be solely focused on solar farms these days.

Assuming that Continental will be chasing Austin Chalk here with a horizontal / frac stimulation effort.

Note the well noted on SE part of the plat (Swift Sonat horizontal). Drilled and "completed" in 1992. Swift got the lateral to TD (about a 4000' lateral in the AC) after having to abandon original lateral. At TD, Sonal took over operations .

A frac was attempted on the lateral (in slotted liner). Well only IP'd 50 BO & 270 MCF per day from the entire lateral. Well only produced about 900 BO before being abandoned. This was called North Haddens Field.

I attached the hand written scout card for this well. No idea what this cost but it was a LOT.

For their sake, I hope that Continental has some good data to support this effort - not a lot of well control here to support AC matrix porosity play.

On 12/10,  Nabors Drilling Rig #B15 reported 10 days Drilling Ahead @ 9776' on the Continental Resources Labokay 20-17 H #1.

Can anyone explain what all of this means? I was able to find it on Sonris, but I don't understand it except it looks like they now have a permit to frac. Thanks.

Yep, the rig has drilled and cased the well.  Likely long gone by now.  The well is now approved for the frac and waiting on a completion crew.

Building on Skip's comment......

Operator had a heck of time getting this well / lateral drilled to TD based on the reports posted on SONRIS.

They were drilling lateral with no problems until twisting off drilling assembly at 18,038'.

  • Could not recover the fish (8' of section including drill bit) and had to sidetrack the hole.

Pulled back to about 16,400' to start the sidetrack and were successful in starting a new hole / lateral - drilled lateral to 19,100' and set casing.

  • Looks like lateral length is less than the planned lateral as per permit (10,300') - won't know until directional survey is posted but probably only about 8800-9000' of lateral drilled.

Sidetrack / new part of the hole is 49' from the original hole that contains the fish.

Questions / Concerns as to completion -

  • One has to wonder how the dogleg in this well associated with the sidetrack start point will impact frac operations. The more tortuosity of the lateral, there harder it is to effectively frac.
  • Other concern in the fact that this is about 1600' of open abandoned lateral less than 50' from the cased lateral. One has to wonder how this "void space" will impact frac stages started coincident with the new part of the lateral (e.g., frac gets into this void zone and deteriorates as to its potential stimulation impact).

PS - and totally unrelated comment - maybe I should offer classes in SONRIS report interpretation? LOL

I'd go to class for sure.  :-)

Thanks Skip and Rock Man for explaining the well report in layman's terms.  I did note the 49' issue but thought that was in reference to the nearby well drilled decades ago. Very interesting insight to the drilling process, their complications and plan B sidetrack. I could never have deciphered that from the report.  Good point with your concern about fracking so close to the open lateral. We'll see what the future brings. Thanks again Professor!
